Living room
The word salon comes to us from the French language, where it means “the large room.” In Hebrew, we sometimes use the expressions “living room” or traklin (parlor), but most people use the word salon.
הַמִּילָּה 'סָלוֹן' בָּאָה אֵלֵינוּ מֵהַשָּׂפָה הַצָּרְפָתִית וּמַשְׁמָעוּתָהּ 'הַחֶדֶר הַגָּדוֹל'. בְּעִבְרִית אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים לִפְעָמִים בַּבִּיטּוּי "חֲדַר מְגוּרִים" אוֹ "טְרַקְלִין" אֲבָל רוֹב הָאֲנָשִׁים מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּמִּילָּה 'סָלוֹן'.
In the salon, we usually have a large sofa and armchairs, and we sit there with our family members, watch television, and talk.
בַּסָּלוֹן יֵשׁ לָנוּ, בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל, סַפָּה גְּדוֹלָה וְכוּרְסָאוֹת וַאֲנַחְנוּ יוֹשְׁבִים שָׁם עִם בְּנֵי הַמִּשְׁפָּחָה שֶׁלָּנוּ, צוֹפִים בַּטֶּלֶוִיזְיָה וּמְדַבְּרִים.
In the center of the salon, there is usually a coffee table, which is lower than a dining table, and on it we place snacks and drinks that we nibble on while watching TV.
בְּאֶמְצַע הַסָּלוֹן יֵשׁ בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל שׁוּלְחָן סָלוֹנִי שֶׁהוּא נָמוּךְ יוֹתֵר מִשּׁוּלְחַן הָאוֹכֶל, וְעָלָיו שָׂמִים חֲטִיפִים וּשְׁתִיָּה שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ "מְנַשְׁנְשִׁים" בִּזְמַן שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ צוֹפִים בַּטֶּלֶוִיזְיָה.

יֵשׁ לָנוּ בְּעִבְרִית אֶת הַבִּיטּוּי "שִׂיחות סָלוֹן". הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה מוֹפִיעַ בְּאַרְגַּז הַבִּיטּוּיִים בְּנוֹשֵׂא חַדְרֵי הַבַּיִת. אִם אַתֶּם רוֹצִים לִלְמוֹד עָלָיו נָא לַחֲצוּ כָּאן.

1. The salon in Grandma’s house feels like a small museum—full of books, pictures, and the scent of nostalgia.
1. הַסָּלוֹן בַּבַּיִת שֶׁל סָבְתָא מַרְגִּישׁ כְּמוֹ מוּזֵיאוֹן קָטָן — מָלֵא סְפָרִים, תְּמוּנוֹת וְרֵיחוֹת שֶׁל נוֹסְטַלְגִּיָּה.
2. Every Friday evening, after the Shabbat meal, we sit together in the salon, watch a movie, and snack on treats.
2. בְּכָל יוֹם שִׁישִּׁי בָּעֶרֶב, אַחֲרֵי אֲרוּחַת הַשַּׁבָּת, אֲנַחְנוּ יוֹשְׁבִים בְּיַחַד בַּסָּלוֹן, צוֹפִים בְּסֶרֶט וּמְנַשְׁנְשִׁים חֲטִיפִים.
3. In the winter, when there’s a power outage, we gather in the salon and turn on the gas heater because the air conditioner doesn’t work and it’s cold in the bedrooms.
3. בַּחוֹרֶף, כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ הַפְסָקַת חַשְׁמַל אֲנַחְנוּ מִתְכַּנְּסִים בַּסָּלוֹן וּמַדְלִיקִים אֶת תַּנּוּר הַגַּז כִּי הַמַּזְגָן לֹא עוֹבֵד וְקַר בַּחֲדָרִים.
4. Yesterday I was so tired and went to bed early. In the morning, I woke up and discovered that the kids had fallen asleep in the salon.
4. אֶתְמוֹל הָיִיתִי מַמָּשׁ עֲיֵפָה וְהָלַכְתִּי לִישׁוֹן מוּקְדָּם. בַּבּוֹקֶר הִתְעוֹרַרְתִּי וְגִלִּיתִי שֶׁהַיְּלָדִים נִרְדְּמוּ בַּסָּלוֹן.
