Lifeguard
The word “matzil” means lifeguard or rescuer, and it comes from the root נ.צ.ל.
The infibituve: le’hatzil — to save or to rescue.
הַמִּילָּה מַצִּיל הִיא בֵּינוֹנִי פּוֹעֵל,
שׁוֹרֶשׁ: נ.צ.ל,
שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל: לְהַצִּיל.
There are lifeguards at the sea and lifeguards at swimming pools. If, heaven forbid, someone is drowning, the lifeguard jumps into the water to rescue them. Lifeguards are also trained in CPR, in case the person is pulled out of the water unconscious.
יֵשׁ מַצִּיל בַּיָּם וְיֵשׁ מַצִּיל בַּבְּרֵיכָה. אִם, חַס וְחָלִילָה, אָדָם טוֹבֵעַ בַּמַּיִם הַמַּצִּיל קוֹפֵץ לַמַיִם וּמוֹצִיא אוֹתוֹ מִשָּׁם. הַמַּצִּיל יוֹדֵעַ גַּם לַעֲשׂוֹת הַחְיָאָה, אִם, חָלִילָה, הַטּוֹבֵעַ יָצָא מֵהַמַּיִם לְלֹא הַכָּרָה.
The lifeguard in the sea sits in a lifeguard tower, where they raise three main types of flags to inform the public of the sea conditions:
White flag – The sea is calm. Swimming is allowed and there is no special danger.
Red flag – The sea is rough. Swimming is dangerous, but not completely forbidden.
Black flag – Swimming is prohibited due to dangerous conditions like strong currents or high waves.
Purple flag – Jellyfish are present in the water, so caution is advised.
הַמַּצִּיל בַּיָּם יוֹשֵׁב בְּסוּכַּת הַמַּצִּיל וְיֵשׁ לוֹ שְׁלוֹשָׁה סוּגִים שֶׁל דְּגָלִים שֶׁהוּא מַצִּיב עַל סוּכַּת הַמַּצִּיל כְּדֵי שֶׁאֲנָשִׁים יֵדְעוּ מָה מַצָּב הַיָּם:
דֶּגֶל לָבָן – הַיָּם רָגוּעַ, הָרַחֲצָה מוּתֶּרֶת וְאֵין סַכָּנָה מְיוּחֶדֶת.
דֶּגֶל אָדוֹם – הַיָּם סוֹעֵר, הָרַחֲצָה מְסוּכֶּנֶת אַךְ לֹא אֲסוּרָה לַחֲלוּטִין.
דֶּגֶל שָׁחוֹר – הָרַחֲצָה אֲסוּרָה בִּגְלַל תְּנָאִים מְסוּכָּנִים כְּמוֹ זְרָמִים חֲזָקִים אוֹ גַּלִּים גְּבוֹהִים.
דֶּגֶל סָגוֹל – יֵשׁ מְדוּזוֹת בַּמַּיִם, וְלָכֵן מוּמְלָץ לְהִזָּהֵר.
In the Mishnah it says: “Whoever saves one life, it is as if they saved an entire world.” The meaning of this expression is: if you save even one person, it’s as if you’ve saved the whole world.
But is that really true? If we save one life, have we saved the entire world?
Yes — we've saved their whole world. Because of that one person might come children, grandchildren, and an entire extended family. That person may go on to fulfill their life’s mission — and so, truly, we’ve saved a world in its entirety.
בַּמִּשְׁנָה כָּתוּב:
"כָּל הַמַּצִּיל נֶפֶשׁ אַחַת כְּאִילּוּ הִצִּיל עוֹלָם וּמְלוֹאוֹ"
מַשְׁמָעוּת הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה – אִם הִצַּלְתַ אָדָם אֶחָד, הִצַּלְתַ אֶת כָּל הָעוֹלָם.
אֲבָל, בֶּאֱמֶת? הַאִם כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מַצִּילִים אָדָם אֶחָד הִצַּלְנוּ אֶת כָּל הָעוֹלָם??
כֵּן, הִצַּלְנוּ אֶת כָּל הָעוֹלָם שֶׁל אוֹתוֹ אָדָם!
כִּי מֵהָאָדָם הַזֶּה יְכוֹלִים לָבוֹא יְלָדִים וּנְכָדִים וְנִינִים וּמִשְׁפָּחָה גְּדוֹלָה וְהָאָדָם הַזֶּה יָכוֹל לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת הַשְּׁלִיחוּת שֶׁלּוֹ בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה.
אָז כֵּן, הִצַּלְנוּ עוֹלָם וּמְלוֹאוֹ.
Here are a few sentences using the word lifeguard:
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה 'מַצִּיל':
1. In the lifeguard tower, the lifeguard uses binoculars to monitor the beachgoers and carries a whistle to warn people not to stray too far from shore or enter hazardous areas.
1. לַמַּצִּיל בְּסוכַּת הַמַּצִּיל יֵשׁ מִשְׁקֶפֶת שֶׁבְּאֶמְצָעוּתָהּ הוּא מַשְׁקִיף עַל צִיבּוּר הָרוֹחֲצִים בַּיָּם, וְיֵשׁ לוֹ גַּם מַשְׁרוֹקִית שֶׁבְּאֶמְצָעוּתָהּ הוּא מַזְהִיר אֶת צִיבּוּר הָרוֹחֲצִים לֹא לְהִתְרַחֵק יוֹתֵר מִדַּי מֵהַחוֹף אוֹ לֹא לְהַגִּיעַ לְאֵיזוֹר מְסוּיָּם בַּיָּם שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ זְרָמִים מְסוּכָּנִים.
2. A lifeguard must be well-trained in resuscitation and handling emergency situations in the water.
2. הַמַּצִּיל חַיָּב לִהְיוֹת מְיוּמָּן בְּהַחְיָאָה וּבְהִתְמוֹדְדוּת עִם מַצָּבֵי חֵירוּם בַּמַּיִם.
3. Today I saw a sign at the beach: “Swimming without a lifeguard is strictly prohibited.”
3. הַיּוֹם רָאִיתִי שֶׁלֶט בְּחוֹף הַיָּם: "הָרַחֲצָה לְלֹא נוֹכְחוּת מַצִּיל אֲסוּרָה בְּהֶחְלֵט".
