Heat wave
The word "חַמְסִין" refers to extremely hot and dry weather. The Hebrew word for "חַמְסִין" is "שָׁרַב", but both terms are commonly used.
חַמְסִין הוּא מֶזֶג אֲוִיר מְאוֹד חַם וְיָבֵשׁ. הַמִּילָּה הָעִבְרִית לְחַמְסִין הִיא שָׁרַב, אֲבָל אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בִּשְׁתֵּי הַמִּילִּים.
The term "חַמְסִין" came to Hebrew from Egyptian Arabic, where it refers to a hot, dry southern wind that blows through Egypt, often carrying sand and dust.
הַמִּילָּה חַמְסִין הִתְגַּלְגְּלָה אֵלֵינוּ מִן הָעַרְבִית הַמִּצְרִית וּמַשְׁמָעוּתָהּ: הָרוּחַ הַחַמָּה וְהַיְּבֵשָׁה הַנּוֹשֶׁבֶת בְּמִצְרַיִם מִכִּיוּוּן דָּרוֹם וּמְבִיאָה אִיתָּה אֲבַק חוֹלוֹת.
The word "שָׁרַב" originates in the Bible:
“They shall neither hunger nor thirst, nor shall heat or sun strike them…” (Isaiah 49:10)
“The sharav will become a lake, and the thirst to springs of water” (Isaiah 35:7)
הַמִּילָּה 'שָׁרַב' מְקוֹרָהּ בַּתּנ"ךְ:
"לֹא יִרְעָבוּ וְלֹא יִצְמָאוּ וְל ֹא יַכֵּם שָׁרָב וָשָׁמֶשׁ" (יְשַׁעְיָהוּ מט, י),
"וְהָיָה הַשָּׁרָב לַאֲגַם וְצִמָּאוֹן לְמַבּוּעֵי מָיִם" (יְשַׁעְיָהוּ לה, ז).
We use both words— חַמְסִין and שָׁרַב —but when it’s so hot, I honestly don’t care what you call it… it’s just way too hot!
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים גַּם בַּמִּילָּה חַמְסִין וְגַם בַּמִּילָּה שָׁרַב, אֲבָל כְּשֶׁחַם מְאוֹד, לֹא מַמָּשׁ אִכְפַּת לִי אִם קוֹרְאִים לְזֶה חַמְסִין אוֹ שָׁרַב...פָּשׁוּט חַם לִי מְאוֹד!!!
