Sandals

Sandals are shoes worn for the summer. A sandal is open and not closed like shoes, and you don’t need to wear socks with sandals — although some people still do.

הַסַּנְדָּלִים הֵם נַעֲלַיִם לִימוֹת הַקַּיִץ.

הַסַּנְדָּל הוּא פָּתוּחַ וְלֹא סָגוּר כְּמוֹ נַעַל, וְגַם לֹא צָרִיךְ לָשִׂים גַּרְבַּיִם כְּמוֹ כְּשֶׁנּוֹעֲלִים נַעֲלַיִם. אֲבָל יֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁנּוֹהֲגִים לִנְעוֹל סַנְדָּלִים עִם גַּרְבַּיִם.

In Israel, some people like wearing sandals even in the winter, because Israel is a warm country most of the year.

בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל יֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁאוֹהֲבִים לָלֶכֶת בְּסַנְדָּלִים גַּם בַּחוֹרֶף, כִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל הִיא אֶרֶץ חַמָּה רוֹב הַשָּׁנָה.

There are many types of sandals. In Israel, people especially like a type with two leather straps, called “biblical sandals”, because in illustrations from biblical times, people are seen wearing similar styles.

יֵשׁ כָּל מִינֵי סוּגִים שֶׁל סַנְדָּלִים. בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל אוֹהֲבִים לָלֶכֶת עִם סַנְדָּלִים שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָהֶם שְׁתֵּי רְצוּעוֹת עוֹר, וְקוֹרְאִים לָהֶם סַנְדָּלִים תָּנָ"כִיִּים, כִּי בְּצִיּוּרִים מִתְּקוּפַת הַתּנ"ךְ אֲנָשִׁים הוֹלְכִים עִם סַנְדָּלִים כָּאֵלֶּה.

Someone who repairs shoes is called a sandlar (סנדלר) — a bit odd, since they mostly fix shoes and not just sandals.

לְאָדָם שֶׁמְּתַקֵּן נַעֲלַיִם קוֹרְאִים סַנְדְּלָר. זֶה קְצָת מוּזָר, כִּי הַסַּנְדְּלָר מְתַקֵּן בְּעִיקָּר נַעֲלַיִם וְלֹא רַק סַנְדָּלִים.

1. My new sandals are made of soft, flexible leather, which makes them especially comfortable for long walks.
