Sunglasses

The phrase “mishkefei shemesh” (sunglasses) is an example of smikhut — a compound formed from two nouns coming from different worlds to create a new meaning. In this case, the two nouns are “mishkafayim” (glasses) and “shemesh” (sun). Note that when the first noun is smikhut, when it is in the plural form, it loses the ending –'ם' and becomes “mishkefei.”

הַצֵּירוּף 'מִשְׁקְפֵי שֶׁמֶשׁ' הוּא צֵירוּף סְמִיכוּת. צֵירוּף סְמִיכוּת הוּא צֵירוּף שֶׁל שְׁנֵי שְׁמוֹת עֶצֶם מֵעוֹלָמוֹת שׁוֹנִים בְּמַטָּרָה לְקַבֵּל מַשְׁמָעוּת חֲדָשָׁה.

בַּצֵּירוּף מִשְׁקְפֵי שֶׁמֶשׁ, שְׁמוֹת הָעֶצֶם הֵם: מִשְׁקָפַיִם וְשֶׁמֶשׁ

שִׂימוּ לֵב כִּי הַמִּילָּה הָרִאשׁוֹנָה בִּסְמִיכוּת, כַּאֲשֶׁר הִיא בְּרַבִּים הִיא מְאַבֶּדֶת אֶת הַסִּיוֹמֶת "ם".

We use sunglasses to protect our eyes. The lenses in sunglasses are dark, so they absorb light and reduce the intensity of light reaching the eye.

People who wear prescription glasses can also get prescription sunglasses that combine both functions.

לָאֲנָשִׁים שֶׁמַּרְכִּיבִים מִשְׁקְפֵי רְאִיָה יֵשׁ אֶפְשָׁרוּת לְהָכִין מִשְׁקְפֵי רְאִיָה בְּשִׁילּוּב עִם מִשְׁקְפֵי שֶׁמֶשׁ.

Sunglasses are useful not only in summer but also in the snow — yes, snow can also cause glare (though that's not very relevant in Israel).
