Under Shirt – Under Shirts
A tank top is a garment worn on the upper part of the body. The difference between a tank top and a shirt is that a tank top has no sleeves.
הַגּוּפִיָּה הִיא בֶּגֶד שֶׁלּוֹבְשִׁים בַּחֵלֶק הָעֶלְיוֹן שֶׁל הַגּוּף. הַהֶבְדֵּל בֵּין הַגּוּפִיָּה לְבֵין הַחוּלְצָה הוּא שֶׁלַגוּפִיָה אֵין שַׁרְווּלִים (Sleeves).
In fact, the tank top is considered an undergarment, meaning it is worn under a shirt — so is its translation in English is “undershirt.”
לְמַעֲשֶׂה, הַגּוּפִיָּה הִיא בֶּגֶד תַּחְתּוֹן, כְּלוֹמַר שָׂמִים אוֹתוֹ מִתַּחַת לַחוּלְצָה, וְגַם הַתַּרְגּוּם לְאַנְגְּלִית הוּא Under shirt (=מִתַּחַת לַחוּלְצָה).
However, today there’s a wide variety of tank tops that are not used as underwear, and people wear them in the summer just like regular shirts.
אֲבָל הַיּוֹם יֵשׁ מִגְוָן גָּדוֹל שֶׁל גּוּפִיּוֹת שֶׁהֵן מַמָּשׁ לֹא מְשַׁמְּשׁוֹת כְּבֶגֶד תַּחְתּוֹן, וְהוֹלְכִים אִיתָן בַּקַּיִץ כְּמוֹ חוּלְצוֹת.
A tank top is often considered informal clothing, and that’s why there are places where wearing one is not allowed — even in schools, students are not allowed to wear tank tops.
גּוּפִיָּה נֶחְשֶׁבֶת לְבֶגֶד לֹא מְכוּבָּד וְלָכֵן יֵשׁ מְקוֹמוֹת שֶׁאֲלֵיהֶם אָסוּר לָבוֹא בְּגוּפִיָּה. גַּם בְּבָתֵּי הַסֵּפֶר אָסוּר לְתַּלְמִידִים לָבוֹא בְּגוּפִיָּה.
Here are a few sentences using the word tank top:
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה 'גּוּפִיָּה':
1. When he works out, he always wears a sports tank top made of sweat-wicking fabric.
1. כְּשֶׁהוּא מִתְאַמֵּן הוּא תָּמִיד לוֹבֵשׁ גּוּפִיַּת סְפּוֹרְט מְנַדֶּפֶת זֵיעָה.
2. He always wears a white tank top under his shirt, even in the summer.

3. בַּלַּיְלָה אֲנִי אוֹהֶבֶת לִלְבּוֹשׁ פִּיגָ'מָה נוֹחָה, הַמּוּרְכֶּבֶת מִגּוּפִיָּה וּמִכְנַס דַּק מִבַּד רַךְ וְנָעִים לְמַגָּע.
4. Next week we’re going on a tour at the Knesset, and we’ve been asked to wear appropriate clothing — that means no tank tops.
