To stand

On Shavuot, the people of Israel went to stand before Mount Sinai to receive the Torah. It was a very moving event.

בְּחַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת הָלְכוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לַעֲמוֹד לִפְנֵי הַר סִינַי כְּדֵי לְקַבֵּל אֶת הַתּוֹרָה.

זֶה הָיָה מַעֲמָד מְאוֹד מְרַגֵּשׁ.

Similarly, during the Memorial Day siren, we pause whatever we are doing to stand in memory of the fallen soldiers of Israel’s wars.

גַּם כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ צְפִירָה בְּיוֹם הַזִּכָּרוֹן אֲנַחְנוּ עוֹצְרִים אֶת מָה שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ עוֹשִׂים כְּדֵי לַעֲמוֹד לְזֶכֶר הַחַיָּלִים שֶׁנָּפְלוּ בְּמִלְחָמוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל.

However, standing is not always exciting. If there is no seat on the bus, and we have to stand the entire trip, it is not exciting at all, but rather annoying.

אֲבָל זֶה לֹא תָּמִיד מְרַגֵּשׁ לַעֲמוֹד.

אִם אֵין מָקוֹם בָּאוֹטוֹבּוּס וְצָרִיךְ לַעֲמוֹד כָּל הַנְּסִיעָה, זֶה בִּכְלָל לֹא מְרַגֵּשׁ, זֶה אֲפִילּוּ מְעַצְבֵּן.

There is a Hebrew expression: "To stand on mine..". When I decide to stand on mine…, I will insist and not give up until what I want is what happens.

יֵשׁ לָנוּ בִּיטּוּי בְּעִבְרִית: "לַעֲמוֹד עַל שֶׁלִּי". כְּשֶׁאֲנִי מַחֲלִיטָה לַעֲמוֹד עַל שֶׁלִּי, אֲנִי אֶתְעַקֵּשׁ וְלֹא אֲוַתֵּר עַד שֶׁמָּה שֶׁאֲנִי רוֹצָה הוּא מָה שֶׁיִּהְיֶה.

הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל 'לַעֲמוֹד':

1. To succeed in the exam, it is important to stick to the schedule and dedicate enough time to studying in advance.

1. כְּדֵי לְהַצְלִיחַ בַּמִּבְחָן, חָשׁוּב לַעֲמוֹד בְּלוּחַ הַזְּמַנִּים וּלְהַקְדִּישׁ מַסְפִּיק זְמַן לִלְמִידָה מֵרֹאשׁ.

2. Before the flight, there was a need to stand in line for a long time to reach the security checks at the airport.

4. I learned that a person must stand by their opinion when they believe in something important and not give up too easily.
