A refrigerator - Refrigerators

The root of the Hebrew word mekarer (refrigerator) is ק.ר.ר, and it is present active in binyan pi’el (verb pattern). The meaning of the verb mekarer is “to cool” or “to lower the temperature.”

שׁוֹרֶשׁ הַמִּילָּה 'מְקָרֵר' הוּא ק.ר.ר וְהוּא בֵּינוֹנִי פּוֹעֵל בְּבִנְיַן פִּעֵל. מַשְׁמָעוּת הַפֹּעַל מְקָרֵר הוּא מוֹרִיד אֶת הַטֶּמְפֶּרָטוּרָה.

And indeed, that’s exactly what a refrigerator does—it cools to a temperature of about 4°C, and in the vegetable drawer, the temperature is around 10°C.

וְאָכֵן זֹאת הַפְּעוּלָּה שֶׁמְּקָרֵר עוֹשֶׂה. הוּא מְקָרֵר לְטֶמְפֶּרָטוּרָה שֶׁל 4 מַעֲלוֹת צֶלְזִיּוּס וּבְתָא הַיְּרָקוֹת יֵשׁ 10 מַעֲלוֹת צֶלְזִיּוּס.

Clearly, the refrigerator is a modern appliance, and therefore the word mekareris part of Modern Hebrew—a term coined by the Academy of the Hebrew Language.

בָּרוּר שֶׁמְּקָרֵר הוּא מוּצָר מוֹדֶרְנִי וּלְפִיכָךְ זוֹהִי מִילָּה מִן הָעִבְרִית הַחֲדָשָׁה שֶׁהִיא חִידּוּשׁ שֶׁל הָאָקָדֶמְיָה לְלָשׁוֹן עִבְרִית.

Before refrigerators were introduced into homes, people used ice to preserve food. When people started purchasing refrigerators, ice vendors began to worry about their jobs and lowered the price of ice.

לִפְנֵי כְּנִיסַת הַמְּקָרְרִים לַבָּתִּים אֲנָשִׁים הִשְׁתַּמְּשׁוּ בְּקֶּרַח כְּדֵי לִשְׁמוֹר עַל הַמָּזוֹן.

כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנָשִׁים הִתְחִילוּ לִרְכּוֹשׁ מְקָרְרִים חַשְׁמַלִּיִּים, מוֹכְרֵי הַקֶּרַח הִתְחִילוּ לִפְחוֹד עַל עֲבוֹדָתָם וְהוֹרִידוּ אֶת מְחִירֵי הַקֶּרַח.
