To open a table
The expression “liftoaḥ shulḥan” (to open a table) is a popular Hebrew idiom that describes a generous and impressive spread of food and drink, usually at a social or festive gathering. It conveys a sense of abundance, wholehearted hospitality, and sometimes even a bit of showing off.
הַבִּיטּוּי "לִפְתּוֹחַ שׁוּלְחָן" הוּא בִּיטּוּי עִבְרִי עֲמָמִי שֶׁמְּתָאֵר הַגָּשָׁה נְדִיבָה וּמַרְשִׁימָה שֶׁל אוֹכֶל וּשְׁתִיָּה, לָרוֹב בְּאֵירוּעַ חֶבְרָתִי אוֹ חֲגִיגִי. הוּא רוֹצֶה לְהַבִּיעַ שֶׁפַע, אֵירוּחַ מִכָּל הַלֵּב וְלִפְעָמִים גַּם רַאַוְתָנוּת.
For example: When we went to visit friends, they planned to have a barbecue and also “opened a table.” There was everything: salads, pickles, soft drinks, beers, and alcohol.
לְדוּגְמָא: כְּשֶׁנָּסַעְנוּ לְבַקֵּר חֲבֵרִים הֵם תִּכְנְנוּ לַעֲשׂוֹת "עַל הָאֵשׁ" וְגַם פָּתְחוּ שׁוּלְחָן. הָיָה שָׁם הַכֹּל: סָלָטִים, חֲמוּצִים, שְׁתִיָּה קַלָּה, בִּירוֹת וְאַלְכּוֹהוֹל.
Here’s another example: Every time I meet up with my girlfriends, the one hosting always “opens a table.” She does it intentionally — to show off her new kitchenware and also to show us how well she cooks and bakes. So in addition to a delicious and interesting main course, there were also three kinds of desserts.
הִנֵּה עוֹד דּוּגְמָא: בְּכָל פַּעַם שֶׁאֲנִי נִפְגֶּשֶׁת עִם חֲבֵרוֹת, הַחֲבֵרָה שֶׁמְּאָרַחַת פּוֹתַחַת שׁוּלְחָן. הִיא עוֹשָׂה אֶת זֶה בְּכַוָּנָה כְּדֵי לְהַרְאוֹת לָנוּ אֶת כְּלֵי הַמִּטְבָּח הַחֲדָשִׁים שֶׁלָּהּ וְגַם כְּדֵי לְהַרְאוֹת לָנוּ כַּמָּה טוֹב הִיא מְבַשֶּׁלֶת וְאוֹפָה. אָז בְּנוֹסָף לְמָנָה עִיקָּרִית טְעִימָה וּמְעַנְיֶנֶת הָיוּ שָׁם גַּם שְׁלוֹשָׁה סוּגֵי קִינּוּחִים.
You can also use this expression humorously or sarcastically. For instance, if I know I have friends who love to host and prepare lots of food whenever guests come over — but I don’t want them to go to too much trouble — I might say: “It’s just me coming, no need to open a table!”
אֶפְשָׁר לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה גַּם קְצָת בְּהוּמוֹר וּבְצִינִיּוּת.
לְדוּגְמָא אִם אֲנִי יוֹדַעַת שֶׁיֵּשׁ לִי חֲבֵרִים שֶׁאוֹהֲבִים לְאָרֵחַ וּלְהָכִין הַרְבֵּה מַאֲכָלִים כְּשֶׁבָּאִים אֲלֵיהֶם אוֹרְחִים, אֲבָל אֲנִי לֹא רוֹצָה שֶׁהֵם יַעַבְדוּ קָשֶׁה כָּל כָּךְ, אֲנִי אֺמַר לָהֶם: רַק אֲנִי בָּאָה, לֹא צָרִיךְ לִפְתּוֹחַ שׁוּלְחָן!
