Musical chairs
Do you know how to play “musical chairs”? Here’s how it goes:
First, count how many children are playing. Then, set up a row of chairs — one fewer than the number of children.
For example, if there are 10 children, you should place only 9 chairs in a row.
The chairs should be arranged so that one faces to the right and the next to the left, alternating directions.
יוֹדְעִים אֵיךְ מְשַׂחֲקִים "כִּסְּאוֹת מוּזִיקָאלִיִּים"?
אָז כָּכָה..
קוֹדֶם כֹּל סוֹפְרִים כַּמָּה יְלָדִים יֵשׁ.
אַחַר כָּךְ מַעֲמִידִים בְּשׁוּרָה מִסְפַּר כִּסְאוֹת שֶׁקָּטָן בְּ – 1 מִמִּסְפַּר הַיְּלָדִים.
כְּלוֹמַר: אִם לְמָשָׁל יֵשׁ לָנוּ 10 יְלָדִים, צָרִיךְ לְהַעֲמִיד בְּשׁוּרָה 9 כִּסְאוֹת בִּלְבַד.
אֶת הַכִּסְאוֹת צָרִיךְ לְהַעֲמִיד בְּצוּרָה כָּזֹאת שֶׁכִּסֵּא אֶחָד פּוֹנֶה לְצַד יָמִין וְכִסֵּא אֶחָד לְצַד שְׂמֹאל.
Start playing music, and the children walk around the row of chairs. At some point, the music stops, and the children must quickly find a chair to sit on. Of course, only 9 children will find a chair, and the 10th child who doesn’t find one is out of the game.
One chair is also removed from the game.
מַתְחִילִים לְהַשְׁמִיעַ מוּזִיקָה וְהַיְּלָדִים צְרִיכִים לְהִסְתּוֹבֵב סְבִיב שׁוּרַת הַכִּסְאוֹת.
בְּאֵיזֶשֶׁהוּא שָׁלָב מַפְסִיקִים אֶת הַמּוּזִיקָה וְהַיְּלָדִים צְרִיכִים לִמְצוֹא לְעַצְמָם כִּסֵּא.
כַּמּוּבָן שֶׁרַק תִּשְׁעָה יְלָדִים יִמְצְאוּ כִּסֵּא לָשֶׁבֶת וְהַיֶּלֶד הָעֲשִׂירִי שֶׁלֹּא מָצָא כִּסֵּא יוֹצֵא מֵהַמִּשְׂחָק.
וְגַם מוֹצִיאִים כִּסֵּא אֶחָד מֵהַמִּשְׂחָק.
There must always be one more child than there are chairs. The game continues this way until there is only one chair and two children left.
The winner is the child who manages to sit on the final chair.
תָּמִיד צָרִיךְ לִהְיוֹת מַצָּב שֶׁמִּסְפַּר הַיְּלָדִים גָּדוֹל בְּ – 1 מִמִּסְפַּר הַכִּסְאוֹת.
כָּכָה מַמְשִׁיכִים עַד שֶׁמַּגִּיעִים לְכִסֵּא אֶחָד וּשְׁנֵי יְלָדִים אַחֲרוֹנִים.
הַמְּנַצֵּחַ הוּא הַיֶּלֶד שֶׁיּוֹשֵׁב עַל הַכִּסֵּא.
We also use the expression “musical chairs” metaphorically when we want to describe a situation where there is supposed to be stability, but people in key positions keep changing frequently.
For example, in a certain company, if the managers are constantly being replaced, it creates confusion among the employees.
Or in politics, we might say: “In the current government, it feels like musical chairs — every month someone else is appointed to a different position.”
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה בְּאוֹפֶן מֵטָאפוֹרִי כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לְהַבִּיעַ שֶׁבְּמָקוֹם מְסוּיָּם שֶׁאֲמוּרָה לִהְיוֹת בּוֹ יַצִּיבוּת, בַּעֲלֵי הַתַּפְקִידִים מִתְחַלְּפִים אַחֲרֵי תְּקוּפוֹת קְצָרוֹת.
לְמָשָׁל, בְּחֶבְרָה מְסוּיֶּמֶת הַמְּנַהֲלִים מִתְחַלְּפִים כָּל הַזְּמַן וְזֶה גּוֹרֵם לְבִלְבּוּל אֵצֶל הָעוֹבְדִים.
גַּם בַּפּוֹלִיטִיקָה אֶפְשָׁר לְהַגִּיד: בַּמֶּמְשָׁלָה הַנּוֹכְחִית זֶה מַרְגִּישׁ כְּמוֹ כִּסְּאוֹת מוּזִיקָלִיִּים – כָּל חוֹדֶשׁ מִישֶׁהוּ אַחֵר מִתְמַנֶּה לְתַפְקִיד אַחֵר.
