Came out of the closet
The expression “to come out of the closet” originally referred primarily to someone who had hidden their sexual orientation from the public — specifically, homosexual orientation.
In the not-so-distant past, homosexuality was not accepted in society at all, and even today, there are communities where it is still not accepted.
הַבִּיטּוּי "יָצָא מֵהָאָרוֹן" בֶּעָבָר הִתְיַחֵס בְּעִיקָּר לְאָדָם שֶׁהִסְתִּיר מֵעֵין הַצִּיבּוּר אֶת נְטִיָּתוֹ הַמִּינִית. מְדוּבָּר עַל נְטִיָּה מִינִית הוֹמוֹסֶקְסוּאָלִית.
בֶּעָבָר הַלֹּא רָחוֹק נְטִיָּה מִינִית הוֹמוֹסֶקְסוּאָלִית לֹא הָיְתָה מְקוּבֶּלֶת כְּלָל בַּחֶבְרָה וַאֲפִילּוּ יֵשׁ חֶבְרוֹת שֶׁבָּהֶן עַד הַיּוֹם הִיא אֵינָהּ מְקוּבֶּלֶת.
Sometimes, the person in question was even married, and often had children, but alongside their seemingly “normal” married life, they maintained a secret relationship with a man — meaning, they kept this relationship hidden from public view.
לִפְעָמִים הָאָדָם הַזֶּה אֲפִילּוּ הָיָה נָשׂוּי וּפְעָמִים רַבּוֹת גַּם יֵשׁ לוֹ יְלָדִים, אֲבָל בְּמַקְבִּיל לְחַיֵּי הַנִּישּׂוּאִין שֶׁלּוֹ, שֶׁכְּלַפֵּי חוּץ נִרְאִים נוֹרְמָלִיִּים, הוּא נִהֵל "בָּאָרוֹן" מַעֲרֶכֶת יְחָסִים עִם גֶּבֶר. כְּלוֹמַר הוּא הִסְתִּיר אֶת מַעֲרֶכֶת הַיְּחָסִים הַזֹּאת מֵעֵינֵי הַצִּיבּוּר.
At some point, for various reasons, this person decided to confess and tell everyone about their true sexual orientation, and perhaps even chose to live openly with their partner. This is what we mean when we say that someone “came out of the closet.”
Sometimes, a person who comes out of the closet is forced to cut ties with their family, because the family does not accept the fact that their relative is homosexual.
בְּאֵיזֶשֶׁהוּא שָׁלָב, מִכָּל מִינֵי סִיבּוֹת, הָאָדָם הַזֶּה הֶחְלִיט לְהִתְוַדּוֹת וּלְסַפֵּר לְכוּלָּם עַל נְטִיָּתוֹ הַמִּינִית הָאֲמִיתִּית וְאוּלַי אַף הֶחְלִיט לִחְיוֹת בְּגָלוּי עִם בֶּן הַזּוּג שֶׁלּוֹ וְעַל כָּךְ נֺאמַר שֶׁהוּא "יָצָא מֵהָאָרוֹן".
לִפְעָמִים, אָדָם שֶׁיָּצָא מֵהָאָרוֹן נֶאֱלַץ לְנַתֵּק אֶת הַקֶּשֶׁר עִם מִשְׁפַּחְתּוֹ כִּי הַמִּשְׁפָּחָה לֹא קִבְּלָה אֶת הָעוּבְדָּה שֶׁבֶּן הַמִּשְׁפָּחָה הוֹמוֹסֶקְסוּאָל.
Today, not only has sexual orientation become more accepted in society, but the expression itself has also expanded to other contexts. For example:
Someone who becomes religious or leaves religion
Someone who changes their political views and joins a different political camp
Or someone who has a medical condition they didn’t want to talk about, but at some point decides to “come out of the closet” and share it openly.
בְּיָמֵינוּ לֹא רַק הַנְּטִיָּה הַמִּינִית הָפְכָה לִהְיוֹת מְקוּבֶּלֶת בַּחֶבְרָה אֶלָּא גַּם הַבִּיטּוּי הָפַךְ לִהְיוֹת שִׁימּוּשִׁי בְּהֶקְשֵׁרִים אֲחֵרִים לְמָשָׁל:
מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁחָזַר בִּתְשׁוּבָה אוֹ בִּשְׁאֵלָה (כְּלוֹמַר שֶׁהָפַךְ לְנַהֵל אוֹרַח חַיִּים דָּתִי אוֹ הַהֵפֶךְ),
מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁשִּׁנָּה אֶת דַּעֲתּוֹ הַפּוֹלִיטִית וְעָבַר לְמַחֲנֶה פּוֹלִיטִי אַחֵר.
אוֹ מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ מַחֲלָה וְהוּא לֹא רָצָה לְסַפֵּר עָלֶיהָ לְאַף אֶחָד, אֲבָל בְּאֵיזֶשֶׁהוּא שָׁלָב הֶחְלִיט "לָצֵאת מֵהָאָרוֹן".
