Every coin has two sides
This expression is truly my life motto. I genuinely believe that every coin has two sides. And you know what else? Sometimes it’s not just two sides — sometimes there are more… Reality is complex, and often a problem has more than one solution.
I think the first step is to clearly recognize that, to understand the full picture — and only then make decisions.
הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה הוּא מַמָּשׁ הַמּוֹטוֹ שֶׁלִּי בַּחַיִּים. אֲנִי בֶּאֱמֶת מַאֲמִינָה שֶׁלְּכָל מַטְבֵּעַ יֵשׁ שְׁנֵי צְדָדִים.
וְאַתֶּם יוֹדְעִים עוֹד מַשֶּׁהוּ?
לִפְעָמִים זֶה לֹא רַק שְׁנֵי צְדָדִים, לִפְעָמִים זֶה יוֹתֵר...
הַמְּצִיאוּת מוּרְכֶּבֶת וְלִפְעָמִים לִבְעָיָה יֵשׁ יוֹתֵר מִפִּתְרוֹן אֶחָד.
אֲנִי חוֹשֶׁבֶת שֶׁצָּרִיךְ קוֹדֶם כֹּל לִרְאוֹת אֶת זֶה בְּאוֹפֶן בָּרוּר, לְהָבִין אֶת הַמַּשְׁמָעוּת וְרַק אַחַר כָּךְ לְקַבֵּל הַחְלָטוֹת.
What does it mean to “understand it”? It means realizing that nothing is perfect, and that in every good thing, there’s also something bad.
Even if something seems excellent to us, we need to think a bit further and understand that there might also be a downside.
מָה זֹאת אוֹמֶרֶת לְהָבִין אֶת זֶה?
זֹאת אוֹמֶרֶת לְהָבִין שֶׁשּׁוּם דָּבָר לֹא מוּשְׁלָם וּבְכָל דָּבָר טוֹב יֵשׁ גַּם רַע. אֲפִילּוּ אִם מַשֶּׁהוּ נִרְאֶה לָנוּ מְצוּיָּן, אֲנַחְנוּ צְרִיכִים לַחֲשׁוֹב עוֹד קְצָת קָדִימָה וּלְהָבִין שֶׁיָּכוֹל לִהְיוֹת שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ גַּם אֵיזוֹ בְּעָיָה.
Once I can see both sides — or even more than two sides — of an issue, I can make an informed decision. In other words, if I need to decide whether to join a certain project, and I clearly see “both sides of the coin,” I can make a real decision about whether it’s worth facing the challenges in order to enjoy the benefits.
בָּרֶגַע שֶׁאֲנִי רוֹאָה אֶת שְׁנֵי הַצְּדָדִים אוֹ יוֹתֵר מִשְּׁנֵי הַצְּדָדִים שֶׁל הָעִנְיָן, אֲנִי יְכוֹלָה לְקַבֵּל הַחְלָטָה מוּשְׂכֶּלֶת.
כְּלוֹמַר, אִם אֲנִי צְרִיכָה לְהַחֲלִיט הַאִם לְהִכָּנֵס לְאֵיזֶשֶׁהוּא פְּרוֹיֶקְט וַאֲנִי רוֹאָה בְּבֵירוּר אֶת "שְׁנֵי הַצְּדָדִים שֶׁל הַמַּטְבֵּעַ" אֲנִי יְכוֹלָה לְקַבֵּל הַחְלָטָה אֲמִיתִּית אִם שָׁוֶה לִי לְהִתְמוֹדֵד עִם הַבְּעָיוֹת שֶׁיֵּשׁ בַּפְּרוֹיֶקְט כְּדֵי לֵהָנוֹת מֵהַיִּתְרוֹנוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ.
Let’s take, for example, someone who is debating whether to leave a job they’ve been at for 10 years, because another company has offered them a 20% higher salary.
The thing is, the new workplace is much farther away than the current one, which means they’ll have to wake up earlier every day, spend more time commuting, and get back home later.
Now that they see “both sides of the coin” (and of course, there are many more sides), they can decide whether that 20% raise is worth the changes they’ll have to make.
בּוֹאוּ נִקַּח לְדוּגְמָא מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁמִּתְלַבֵּט אִם לַעֲזוֹב מְקוֹם עֲבוֹדָה שֶׁבּוֹ הוּא עוֹבֵד כְּבָר 10 שָׁנִים, כִּי בִּמְקוֹם עֲבוֹדָה אַחֵר הִצִּיעוּ לוֹ 20% יוֹתֵר בַּמַּשְׂכּוֹרֶת.
הָעִנְיָן הוּא שֶׁמְּקוֹם הָעֲבוֹדָה הֶחָדָשׁ נִמְצָא בְּמֶרְחָק הַרְבֵּה יוֹתֵר גָּדוֹל מִמְּקוֹם הָעֲבוֹדָה הַנּוֹכְחִי וְזֶה אוֹמֵר שֶׁהוּא יִצְטָרֵךְ לָקוּם מוּקְדָּם יוֹתֵר כָּל יוֹם, לְבַלּוֹת הַרְבֵּה יוֹתֵר זְמַן עַל הַכְּבִישׁ וְגַם לַחֲזוֹר הַבַּיְתָה מְאוּחָר יוֹתֵר.
עַכְשָׁיו כְּשֶׁהוּא רוֹאֶה אֶת "שְׁנֵי הַצְּדָדִים שֶׁל הַמַּטְבֵּעַ" (כַּמּוּבָן שֶׁיֵּשׁ כָּאן עוֹד הַרְבֵּה צְדָדִים) הוּא יָכוֹל לְהַחֲלִיט הַאִם שָׁוֶה לוֹ עוֹד 20% בַּמַּשְׂכּוֹרֶת תְּמוּרַת הַשִּׁינּוּיִים הָאֵלֶּה שֶׁהוּא צָרִיךְ לַעֲשׂוֹת.
