Cold shower
The expression “cold shower” (miklahat kara) can be used both in a literal and a metaphorical sense.
In the literal sense, if someone is feeling angry or agitated, I might suggest they go take a cold shower to calm down.
בַּבִּיטּוּי 'מִקְלַחַת קָרָה' אֲנַחְנוּ יְכוֹלִים לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ גַּם בְּמַשְׁמָעוּת פִיזִית וְגַם בְּמַשְׁמָעוּת מֵטָאפוֹרִית.
בַּמַּשְׁמָעוּת הַפִיזִית אִם מִישֶׁהוּ עַצְבָּנִי, אֲנִי יְכוֹלָה לְהַצִּיעַ לוֹ לָלֶכֶת וְלַעֲשׂוֹת מִקְלַחַת קָרָה כְּדֵי לְהֵרָגֵעַ.
This is real!
In medical literature, a cold shower is considered a health aid. It helps improve mood because when you take a cold shower, endorphins are released into the bloodstream, which leads to a better mood — just like when you engage in physical activity.

בַּסִּפְרוּת הָרְפוּאִית מִקְלַחַת קָרָה נֶחֱשֶׁבֶת לִכְלִי עֵזֶר בְּרִיאוּתִי. הִיא עוֹזֶרֶת לְשַׁפֵּר אֶת מַצַּב הָרוּחַ כִּי כְּשֶׁאַתָּה עוֹשֶׂה מִקְלַחַת קָרָה מִשְׁתַּחְרְרִים לַדָּם אֶנְדּוֹרְפִינִים וְזֶה גּוֹרֵם לְמַצַּב רוּחַ טוֹב יוֹתֵר בְּדִיּוּק כְּמוֹ כַּאֲשֶׁר עוֹשִׂים פְּעִילוּת גּוּפָנִית.
In the metaphorical sense, the expression refers to a moment of rude awakening or sudden realization — understanding something you hadn’t grasped before.
וּבַמַּשְׁמָעוּת הַמֵּטָאפוֹרִית הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה מִתְיַחֵס לְהִתְפַּכְּחוּת וַהֲבָנָה שֶׁל מַשֶּׁהוּ שֶׁלֹּא הֵבַנּוּ קוֹדֶם.
Imagine a situation where someone is in love with someone else. He buys her gifts, pampers her, and is convinced that she loves him too. But the truth is that she doesn’t love him at all — she’s just taking advantage of him and accepting his gifts and attention.
Then one day, he sees her with someone else and that moment hits him like a cold shower.
דַּמְיְנוּ מִקְרֶה שֶׁבּוֹ מִישֶׁהוּ אוֹהֵב מִישֶׁהִי וְהוּא קוֹנֶה לָהּ מַתָּנוֹת וּמְפַנֵּק אוֹתָהּ וְהוּא בָּטוּחַ שֶׁהִיא גַּם אוֹהֶבֶת אוֹתוֹ. אֲבָל הָאֱמֶת הִיא שֶׁהִיא בִּכְלָל לֹא אוֹהֶבֶת אוֹתוֹ, וְרַק מְנַצֶּלֶת אוֹתוֹ, וּמְקַבֶּלֶת אֶת הַמַּתָּנוֹת וְהַפִּינּוּקִים שֶׁלּוֹ.
יוֹם אֶחָד הוּא רוֹאֶה אוֹתָהּ עִם מִישֶׁהוּ אַחֵר וְזֶה כְּמוֹ מִקְלַחַת קָרָה עֲבוּרוֹ.
