Court fool
The court jester was a professional figure in the courts of kings and nobles, primarily in medieval Europe.
His role was to entertain and amuse the royal family and the members of the court.
The court jester was responsible for performances and games held during parties and gatherings in the royal court or in the homes of wealthy families.
לֵיצַן הֶחָצֵר הָיָה דְּמוּת מִקְצוֹעִית בְּחַצְרוֹת מְלָכִים וַאֲצִילִים, בְּעִיקָּר בְּאֵירוֹפָּה שֶׁל יְמֵי הַבֵּינַיִם.
תַּפְקִידוֹ הָיָה לְבַדֵּר וּלְהַצְחִיק אֶת מִשְׁפַּחַת ה ַמְּלוּכָה וְאֶת אַנְשֵׁי הֶחָצֵר.
לֵיצַן הֶחָצֵר הָיָה אַחְרַאי עַל הוֹפָעוֹת וּמִשְׂחָקִים שֶׁנֶּעֶרְכוּ בְּמַהֲלַךְ מְסִיבּוֹת שֶׁהָיוּ נֶעֱרָכוֹת בַּחֲצַר הַמַּלְכוּת אוֹ בְּחַצְרוֹת הַמִּשְׁפָּחוֹת הָעֲשִׁירוֹת.
Because the court jester was constantly engaged in humor and entertainment, no one took him seriously. In other words, people would speak freely — even about important matters or secrets — in his presence, because no one considered him a threat or someone who would treat things seriously.
בִּגְלַל שֶׁלֵּיצָן הֶחָצֵר עָסַק כָּל הַזְּמַן בְּבִידּוּר וּצְחוֹק אַף אֶחָד לֹא לָקַח אוֹתוֹ בִּרְצִינוּת. כְּלוֹמַר אֲנָשִׁים הָיוּ מְדַבְּרִים בְּחוֺפְשִׁיּוּת, גַּם עַל נוֹשְׂאִים חֲשׁוּבִים וְגַם עַל סוֹדוֹת גַּם כְּשֶׁהוּא הָיָה בַּסְּבִיבָה, כִּי אַף אֶחָד לֹא חָשַׁב שֶׁהוּא גּוֹרֵם מְאַיֵּם אוֹ מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁמִּתְיַחֵס לִדְבָרִים רְצִינִיִּים.
And then… what happened?
Court jesters became confidants of kings, and report to the king various secrets they had heard from people who didn’t take them seriously.
Interestingly, court jesters also appeared in ancient China, where they sometimes served as wise advisors disguised as entertainers.
וְאָז... מָה קָרָה?
לֵיצָנֵי הֶחָצֵר הָפְכוּ לְאַנְשֵׁי סוֹד שֶׁל הַמְּלָכִים וְסִפְּרוּ לַמֶּלֶךְ סוֹדוֹת שׁוֹנִים שֶׁשָּׁמְעוּ מֵאֲנָשִׁים שֶׁלֹּא הִתְיַחֲסוּ אֲלֵיהֶם בִּרְצִינוּת.
מְעַנְיֵן לְצַיֵּן שֶׁלֵּיצָנֵי חָצֵר הוֹפִיעוּ גַּם בְּסִין הָעַתִּיקָה, שָׁם שִׁמְּשׁוּ גַּם כְּיוֹעֲצִים חֲכָמִים בְּמַסְוֶה שֶׁל בִּידּוּר.
In modern usage, the expression “court jester” is used in a critical or sarcastic way to describe someone who amuses others but is not taken seriously, or someone who tries to please those in power simply because they depend on them — just as the livelihood of the court jester depended on the king.
בַּמַּשְׁמָעוּת הַמּוֹדֶרְנִית הַבִּיטּוּי "לֵיצַן הֶחָצֵר" מְדַבֵּר בְּצוּרָה בִּקּוֺרְתִּית אוֹ סַרְקַסְטִית עַל אָדָם שֶׁמַּצְחִיק אֶת הַסּוֹבְבִים אַךְ אֵינוֹ נִלְקַח בִּרְצִינוּת, אוֹ מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁמְּנַסֶּה לְרַצּוֹת אֶת בַּעֲלֵי הַכּוֹחַ רַק בִּגְלַל שֶׁהוּא תָּלוּי בָּהֶם בְּדִיּוּק כְּפִי שֶׁפַּרְנָסָתוֹ שֶׁל לֵיצַן הֶחָצֵר הָיְתָה תְּלוּיָה בַּמֶּלֶךְ.
