חָצֵר אֲחוֹרִית

Back yard
We can use the expression “backyard” (ḥatzer aḥorit) both in a literal and a metaphorical sense.
In the literal sense, we’re talking about people who usually live in a house with land and have both a front yard and a backyard.
אֲנַחְנוּ יְכוֹלִים לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בַּבִּיטּוּי 'חָצֵר אֲחוֹרִית' גַּם בְּמַשְׁמָעוּת פִיזִית וְגַם בְּמַשְׁמָעוּת מֵטָאפוֹרִית.
בַּמַּשְׁמָעוּת הַפִיזִית אֲנַחְנוּ מְדַבְּרִים עַל אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁגָּרִים בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל בְּבֵית קַרְקַע וְ יֵשׁ לָהֶם חָצֵר קִדְמִית וְגַם חָצֵר אֲחוֹרִית.
Sometimes we see that such people have a well-maintained and clean front yard — with blooming flowers in beautiful colors, neatly trimmed grass, and no trash or clutter.
People tend to pay a lot of attention to their front yard, investing effort in maintaining and cleaning it.
But if we go around to their backyard, we might see a lot of discarded items, mess, and dirt.
לִפְעָמִים אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹאִים אֵצֶל אֲנָשִׁים כָּאֵלֶּה, שֶׁהֶחָצֵר הַקִּדְמִית מְטוּפַּחַת וּנְקִיָּה. יֵשׁ פְּרָחִים פּוֹרְחִים בִּצְבָעִים יָפִים, הַדֶּשֶׁא מְכוּסָּח וּמְטוּפָּח וְאֵין לִכְלוּכִים וּדְבָרִים זְרוּקִים.
אֲנָשִׁים בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל נוֹהֲגִים לָשִׂים לֵב מְאוֹד לֶחָצֵר הַקִּדְמִית שֶׁלָּהֶם, לְהַשְׁקִיעַ בָּהּ מַאֲמָץ, לְטַפֵּחַ וּלְנַקּוֹת.
אֲבָל אִם נַעֲבוֹר לֶחָצֵר הָאֲחוֹרִית שֶׁלָּהֶם נִרְאֶה הַרְבֵּה דְּבָרִים זְרוּקִים, בָּלָאגָן וְלִכְלוּךְ.
Of course, this isn’t always the case. Some people take care of and organize their backyard as well — and sometimes they even have a pool, a grill, and use the space for family gatherings and meals.
With such people, we’ll find a well-kept backyard too.
זֶה לֹא תָּמִיד נָכוֹן. יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁמְּטַפְּחִים, מְנַקִּים וּמְסַדְּרִים גַּם אֶת הֶחָצֵר הָאֲחוֹרִית שֶׁלָּהֶם וְלִפְעָמִים יֵשׁ לָהֶם בְּרֵיכָה בֶּחָצֵר הָאֲחוֹרִית וְאוּלַי גַּם מַנְגָּל וְהֵם נוֹהֲגִים לֶאֱכוֹל שָׁם וְלַעֲרוֹךְ מִפְגָּשִׁים מִשְׁפַּחְתִּיִּים.
אֵצֶל אֲנָשִׁים כָּאֵלֶּה אֲנַחְנוּ נִמְצָא גַּם חָצֵר אֲחוֹרִית מְטוּפַּחַת.
In any case, we also use the expression “backyard” in a metaphorical sense to describe neglected social issues.
For example, we might talk about marginalized populations in society as being in the “backyard” of society, because the state doesn’t allocate enough resources to support them and essentially neglects them — just like some people neglect their physical backyard.
בְּכָל אוֹפֶן, אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי 'חָצֵר אֲחוֹרִית' בְּמַשְׁמָעוּת מֵטָאפוֹרִית כְּדֵי לְתָאֵר נוֹשְׂאִים חֶבְרָתִיִּים מוּזְנָחִים.
לְמָשָׁל: אֲנַחְנוּ מְדַבְּרִים עַל אוּכְלוּסִיּוֹת מוּחְלָשׁוֹת בַּחֶבְרָה שֶׁנֶּחְשָׁבוֹת לֶחָצֵר הָאֲחוֹרִית שֶׁל הַחֶבְרָה כִּי הַמְּדִינָה לֹא נוֹתֶנֶת מַסְפִּיק תַּקְצִיבִים כְּדֵי לְטַפֵּל בָּאוּכְלוּסִיּוֹת הָאֵלֶּה, וּמַזְנִיחָה אוֹתָן, בְּדִיּוּק כְּפִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁמַּזְנִיחִים אֶת הֶחָצֵר הָאֲחוֹרִית שֶׁלָּהֶם.
