Behind closed doors
The expression “beḥadrei ḥadarim” (בְּחַדְרֵי חֲדָרִים) is an ancient Hebrew phrase that already appears in rabbinic literature (Sifrut Ḥazal), and its meaning is: in secret, in hiding, far from the public eye.
הַבִּיטּוּי "בְּחַדְרֵי חֲדָרִים" הוּא בִּיטּוּי עִבְרִי עַתִּיק שֶׁמּוֹפִיעַ כְּבָר בְּסִפְרוּת חז"ל, וּמַשְׁמָעוּתוֹ הִיא: בַּסֵּתֶר, בְּהֵחָבֵא, הַרְחֵק מֵעֵינֵי הַצִּיבּוּר.
There are things that are best kept “behind closed doors,” meaning in privacy and not in public.
For example: intimate relationships, private conversations, and even anonymous giving — that is, a donation given by someone who does not want the recipient to know who gave it.
יֵשׁ דְּבָרִים שֶׁיָּפֶה לָהֶם שֶׁיִּתְקַיְּמוּ בְּחַדְרֵי חֲדָרִים, כְּלוֹמַר בִּפְרָטִיּוּת וְלֹא בְּפוּמְבִּי, לְמָשָׁל: יְחָסִים אִינְטִימִיִּים, שִׂיחוֹת אִינְטִימִיּוֹת וַאֲפִילּוּ מַתָּן בַּסֵּתֶר, כְּלוֹמַר תְּרוּמָה שֶׁאָדָם נוֹתֵן, אֲבָל הוּא לֹא רוֹצֶה שֶׁמִּי שֶׁקִּבֵּל אֶת הַתְּרוּמָה יֵדַע מֵאֵיפֹה הוּא קִבֵּל אוֹתָהּ.
At the same time, we must ensure that even things done “behind closed doors” still adhere to basic logic and moral standards.
For example, forbidden romantic relationships — such as relationships between people who are married to others.
Even if these relationships take place in private, they are still considered betrayal and are morally wrong.
יַחַד עִם זֶה עָלֵינוּ לְוַדֵּא שֶׁגַּם דְּבָרִים שֶׁנַּעֲשִׂים בְּחַדְרֵי חֲדָרִים עֲדַיִן עוֹמְדִים בִּכְלָלֵי הַהִגָּיוֹן הַבָּרִיא וְכַמּוּבָן הַמּוּסָר. לְמָשָׁל, יְחָסִים רוֹמַנְטִיִּים אֲסוּרִים, כְּלוֹמַר יְחָסִים שֶׁבֵּין אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁנְּשׂוּאִים לַאֲנָשִׁים אֲחֵרִים.
גַּם אִם הַיְּחָסִים הָאֵלֶּה נַעֲשִׂים בְּחַדְרֵי חֲדָרִים הֲרֵי שֶׁזֹּאת נֶחְשֶׁבֶת לִבְגִידָה וְהִיא מְנוּגֶּדֶת לִכְלָלֵי הַמּוּסָר.
This expression is also used in political criticism of decisions made without transparency.
Sometimes public officials make decisions that affect the public — often involving the use of public funds — but these decisions are made behind closed doors, without involving or informing the public.
When such decisions are later revealed, they often anger parts of the public and lead to opposition.
הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה מְשַׁמֵּשׁ גַּם לְבִקּוֹרֶת פּוֹלִיטִית עַל הַחְלָטוֹת שֶׁמִּתְקַבְּלוֹת בְּחוֹסֶר שְׁקִיפוּת.
לִפְעָמִים אַנְשֵׁי צִיבּוּר מְקַבְּלִים הַחְלָטוֹת שֶׁמַּשְׁפִּיעוֹת עַל הַצִּיבּוּר וְלָרוֹב כּוֹלְלוֹת גַּם שִׁימּוּשׁ בְּכֶסֶף צִיבּוּרִי, אֲבָל הַהַחְלָטוֹת הָאֵלֶּה מִתְקַבְּלוֹת בְּחַדְרֵי חֲדָרִים בְּלִי לְשַׁתֵּף אֶת הַצִּיבּוּר.
כַּאֲשֶׁר הַהַחְלָטוֹת הָאֵלֶּה מִתְפַּרְסְמוֹת הֵן מַרְגִּיזוֹת חֵלֶק מֵהַצִּיבּוּר וְגוֹרְמוֹת לְהִתְנַגְּדוּת.
