An onion - Onions
They say that when you cut an onion, you start crying....
אוֹמְרִים שֶׁמִּי שֶׁחוֹתֵךְ בָּצָל מַתְחִיל לִבְכּוֹת....
This is not crying from grief or pain, it is crying caused by chemicals that are released to the air when you cut the onion, and these chemicals cause the body to shed tears to wash these chemicals out of the eyes.
זֶה לֹא בְּכִי שֶׁל צַעַר אוֹ כְּאֵב, זֶה בְּכִי שֶׁנִּגְרַם בִּגְלַל חוֹמָרִים שֶׁמִּשְׁתַּחְרְרִים לָאֲוִירכְּשֶׁחוֹתְכִים אֶת הַבָּצָל, וְהֶחוֹמָרִים הָאֵלֶּה גּוֹרְמִים לַגּוּף לְהַזִּיל דְּמָעוֹת כְּדֵי לְנַקּוֹת אֶת הֶחוֹמָרִים הָאֵלֶּה מֵהָעֵינַיִם.
A long time ago, every time I was cutting an onion, my eyes would burn....oh that was horrible. But that's a long time ago. Today I can cut a lot of onions without crying....
פַּעַם, לִפְנֵי הַרְבֵּה זְמַן, בְּכָל פַּעַם שֶׁהָיִיתִי חוֹתֶכֶת בָּצָל, הָעֵינַיִם שֶׁלִּי הָיוּ שׂוֹרְפוֹת....אוֹי זֶה הָיָה נוֹרָא. אֲבָל זֶה כְּבָר עָבַר לִי. הַיּוֹם אֲנִי יְכוֹלָה לַחֲתּוֹךְ הַרְבֵּה בְּצָלִים בְּלִי לִבְכּוֹת....
I use a lot of onions when I cook. I chop the onion and fry it in a little oil and then add the chicken or other vegetables.
אֲנִי מִשְׁתַּמֶּשֶׁת הַרְבֵּה בְּבָצָל כְּשֶׁאֲנִי מְבַשֶּׁלֶת. אֲנִי קוֹצֶצֶת בָּצָל וּמְטַגֶּנֶת אוֹתוֹ בִּקְצָת שֶׁמֶן וְאָז מוֹסִיפָה עוֹף אוֹ יְרָקוֹת אֲחֵרִים.
