There are many varieties of pears, but in Israel, one primary variety called Safadona is grown. The "Safadona" arrived in Israel in the 1930s from Italy.
יֵשׁ הַרְבֵּה זָנִים שֶׁל אַגָּסִים אֲבָל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל גָּדֵל זַן עִיקָּרִי אֶחָד הַנִּקְרָא סָפָדוֺנָה. הַ"סָפָדוֺנָה" הִגִּיעַ לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל בִּשְׁנוֹת הַ-30 שֶׁל הַמֵּאָה הָ-20 מֵאִיטַלְיָה.
The unique and rounded shape of the pear is often used in ancient Roman and Byzantine art. This can be seen in stone carvings and mosaics from Italy, Turkey, and Greece, but also in various pictures and household items.
