מָה שֶׁשָּׂנוּא עָלֶיךָ אַל תַּעֲשֶׂה לַחֲבֵרֶךָ
MA SHESANU ALECHA AL TAA’SE LECHAVERCHA
Do not do to your friend what is hateful to you
This expression is written in the Talmud and it is said that the elder Hillel, the president of the Sanhedrin, said it when he was asked to teach the entire Torah on one leg.
הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כָּתוּב בַּתַּלְמוּד וְנֶאֱמַר שָׁם שֶׁהִלֵּל הַזָּקֵן, נְשִׂיא הַסַּנְהֶדְרִין אָמַר אוֹתוֹ כְּשֶׁנִּתְבַּקֵּשׁ לְלַמֵּד אֶת כָּל הַתּוֹרָה עַל רֶגֶל אַחַת.
The meaning of this expression is quite clear.
כַּוָּנַת הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה דֵּי בְּרוּרָה.
We don’t like being made fun of, so we shouldn’t make fun of anyone else.
We don’t like being lied to, so we certainly shouldn’t do it to anyone else.
אֲנַחְנוּ לֹא אוֹהֲבִים כְּשֶׁלּוֹעֲגִים לָנוּ, אָז אֲנַחְנוּ לֹא צְרִיכִים לִלְעוֹג לְמִישֶׁהוּ אַחֵר. אֲנַחְנוּ לֹא אוֹהֲבִים כְּשֶׁמְּשַׁקְּרִים לָנוּ, אָז בְּוַדַּאי שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ לֹא צְרִיכִים לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת זֶה לְמִישֶׁהוּ אַחֵר.
The meaning of this expression is quite clear.
אֲבָל תַּרְשׁוּ לִי לִשְׁאוֹל אֶתְכֶם מַשֶּׁהוּ: אֲנִי מַמָּשׁ שׂוֹנֵאת סָלַט חֲצִילִים, אֲבָל חָבֵר שֶׁהִזְמַנְתִּי לָאֲרוּחָה מַמָּשׁ אוֹהֵב – הַאִם אֲנִי לֹא צְרִיכָה לְהָכִין לוֹ?
