Pulled out of his sleeve
We use this expression when we want to say that someone responded quickly to something even though they didn't know the subject.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לוֹמַר שֶׁמִּישֶׁהוּ הֵגִיב מַהֵר עַל מַשֶּׁהוּ אֲפִילּוּ שֶׁהוּא לֹא הִכִּיר אֶת הַנּוֹשֵׂא.
This expression comes from the world of magic. The magician invites someone from the audience and asks them to choose a card.
הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה מַגִּיעַ מֵעוֹלָם הַקּוֹסְמִים. הַקּוֹסֵם מַזְמִין מִישֶׁהוּ מֵהַקָּהָל וּמְבַקֵּשׁ מִמֶּנּוֹ לִבְחוֹר קְלָף.
The magician hides the chosen card in his sleeve and then he pulls it out of his sleeve and shows everyone that he "knows" what the card is.
אֶת הַקְּלָף שֶׁנִּבְחַר הַקּוֹסֵם מַחְבִּיא בַּשַּׁרְווּל וְאָז הוּא שׁוֹלֵף אוֹתוֹ מֵהַשַּׁרְווּל וּמַרְאֶה לְכוּלָּם שֶׁהוּא "יוֹדֵעַ" מָה הוּא הַקְּלָף.
Sometimes when you pull answers out of your sleeve it works out and you answer correctly, but sometimes your answer can be so stupid that everyone realizes that you're just pulling out of your sleeve.
לִפְעָמִים כְּשֶׁאַתָּה שׁוֹלֵף תְּשׁוּבוֹת מֵהַשַּׁרְווּל זֶה מַצְלִיחַ לְךָ וְאַתָּה עוֹנֶה נָכוֹן, אֲבָל לִפְעָמִים הַתְּשׁוּבָה שֶׁלְּךָ יְכוֹלָה לִהְיוֹת כָּל כָּךְ מְטוּמְטֶמֶת וְאָז כּוּלָּם מְבִינִים שֶׁאַתָּה סְתָם שׁוֹלֵף מֵהַשַּׁרְווּל.
