Baseless hatred
The Talmud tells us the story of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza (Tractate Gittin):
הַתַּלְמוּד מְסַפֵּר לָנוּ עַל קַמְצָא וּבַר קַמְצָא (מַסֶּכֶת גִּיטִּין):
“There was a man who had a friend named Kamtza and an enemy named Bar Kamtza, and he prepared a banquet. He said to his servant: ‘Go and invite Kamtza.’ The servant went and mistakenly invited Bar Kamtza.
"הָיָה אִישׁ שֶׁהָיָה לוֹ אוֹהֵב בְּשֵׁם קַמְצָא וְשׂוֹנֵא בְּשֵּׁם בַּר קַמְצָא וְהוּא עָרַךְ סְעוּדָה. אָמַר לִמְשַׂרְתוֹ: 'לֵךְ תַּזְמִין לִי אֶת קַמְצָא', הָלַךְ הַמְּשָׁרֵת וְהִזְמִין בְּטָעוּת אֶת בַּר קַמְצָא.
The host arrived and found Bar Kamtza sitting at the banquet. He said to him: ‘We are enemies — what are you doing here? Get up and leave!’
בָּא בַּעַל הַבַּיִת וּמָצָא אֶת בַּר קַמְצָא שֶׁהָיָה יוֹשֵׁב בַּסְּעוּדָה. אָמַר לוֹ: 'הֲרֵי אֲנַחְנוּ אוֹיְבִים, מָה אַתָּה עוֹשֶׂה כָּאן? קוּם וְצֵא!'.
Bar Kamtza said to him: ‘Since I’m already here, let me stay and I’ll pay you for whatever I eat and drink.’ The host replied: ‘No.’
אָמַר לוֹ בַּר קַמְצָא: 'מִכֵּיוָן שֶׁאֲנִי כְּבָר כָּאן תַּעֲזוֹב אוֹתִי וַאֲשַׁלֵּם לְךָ מָה שֶׁאֲנִי אוֺכֵל וְשׁוֹתֶה'. אָמַר לוֹ: 'לֹא'.
Bar Kamtza said: ‘I’ll pay you for half the cost of the entire banquet.’ The host said: ‘No.’
אָמַר לוֹ בַּר קַמְצָא: 'אֲשַׁלֵּם לְךָ דְּמֵי חֵצִי מִכָּל הוֹצָאוֹת הַסְּעוּדָה'. אָמַר לוֹ: 'לֹא'.
Bar Kamtza said: ‘I’ll pay you for the entire cost of the banquet.’ The host still said: ‘No.’
אָמַר לוֹ בַּר קַמְצָא: 'אֲשַׁלֵּם לְךָ דְּמֵי כֹּל הַסְּעוּדָה'. אָמַר לוֹ: 'לֹא'.
He grabbed him by the hand, stood him up, and threw him out.
Bar Kamtza said: ‘Since the sages were sitting there and did nothing, that means they don’t care. I will go and sow discord between them and the king...’”
תָּפַס אוֹתוֹ בַּיָּד, הֵקִים אוֹתוֹ וְהוֹצִיא אוֹתוֹ. אָמַר בַּר קַמְצָא: "הוֹאִיל וְהָיוּ יוֹשְׁבִים חֲכָמִים וְלֹא עָשׂוּ כְּלוּם זֶה אוֹמֵר שֶׁלֹּא אִכְפַּת לָהֶם, אֵלֵךְ וַאֲסַכְסֵךְ אוֹתָם עִם הַמֶּלֶךְ...".
In the story of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza, we see that the hatred one person feels toward another can be stronger than the love he has for himself, as he chooses revenge even at the expense of his own benefit. This is called baseless hatred (sinat ḥinam).
בַּסִּיפּוּר שֶׁל קַמְצָא וּבַר קַמְצָא אָנוּ רוֹאִים שֶׁהַשּׂוֹנֵא שׂוֹנֵא אֶת הַשֵּׁנִי יוֹתֵר מֵאֲשֶׁר אוֹהֵב אֶת עַצְמוֹ כִּי הוּא מַעֲדִיף נְקָמָה אֲפִילּוּ עַל פְּנֵי טוֹבָתוֹ. זֹאת שִׂנְאַת חִינָּם.
And it is because of baseless hatred, say the sages, that both Temples were destroyed.
וְעַל שִׂנְאַת חִינָּם, אוֹמְרִים הַחֲכָמִים, חָרְבוּ שְׁנֵי בָּתֵּי הַמִּקְדָּשׁ.
