To hate
The infinitive “to hate” is the opposite of “to love”. It’s a difficult verb. A difficult emotion.
שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לִשְׂנוֹא הוּא הַהֵיפֶךְ מִלֶּאֱהוֹב. שֵׁם פֹּעַל קָשֶׁה. רֶגֶשׁ קָשֶׁה.
I hope I’ll never have to hate anyone, but sometimes there are things that cause us to hate.
אֲנִי מְקַוָּה שֶׁלֹּא אֶצְטָרֵךְ לִשְׂנוֹא אַף אֶחָד, אֲבָל לִפְעָמִים יֵשׁ דְּבָרִים שֶׁגּוֹרְמִים לָנוּ לִשְׂנוֹא.
For example, someone who writes stories or films may cause us to hate certain characters in the story in order to create tension and interest in the plot or movie.
לְמָשָׁל, מִי שֶׁכּוֹתֵב סִיפּוּרִים אוֹ סְרָטִים גּוֹרֵם לָנוּ לִשְׂנוֹא דְּמוּיוֹת מְסוּיָּמוֹת בַּסִּיפּוּר כְּדֵי לִיצוֹר מֶתַח וְעִנְיָן בַּסִּיפּוּר אוֹ בַּסֶּרֶט.
It is said that the Temple was destroyed because of baseless hatred—meaning that people in the Land of Israel at the time of the Temple used to hate one another without reason.
