Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and Titus, emperor of Rome, succeeded in destroying the First and Second Temples.
נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר, מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל וְטִיטוּס, קֵיסָר רוֹמָא הִצְלִיחוּ לְהַחֲרִיב אֶת בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹן וְהַשֵּׁנִי.
The 9th of Av is the day on which we mourn the fact that they succeeded in destroying both Temples.
ט' בְּאָב הוּא הַיּוֹם שֶׁבּוֹ אֲנַחְנוּ מִתְאַבְּלִים עַל כָּךְ שֶׁהֵם הִצְלִיחוּ לְהַחֲרִיב אֶת שְׁנֵי בָּתֵּי הַמִּקְדָּשׁ.
We use the verb “to destroy” when we want to talk about total destruction. For example: If I have a friend who constantly argues with me and makes me angry, I might ask her: “Are you trying to destroy our relationship?”
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בְּשֵׁם הַפֹּעַל הַזֶּה כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לְדַבֵּר עַל הֶרֶס מוּחְלָט. לְמָשָׁל: אִם יֵשׁ לִי חֲבֵרָה וְהִיא כָּל הַזְּמַן רַבָה אִיתִּי וּמַכְעִיסָה אוֹתִי, אֲנִי אֶשְׁאַל אוֹתָהּ: "הַאִם אַתְּ מְנַסָּה לְהַחֲרִיב אֶת הַיְּחָסִים בֵּינֵנוּ?"
If, God forbid, Iran were to obtain a nuclear bomb, it could destroy the entire world. But I hope that the actions of the Israeli and American air forces have succeeded in destroying Iran’s ability to produce a nuclear weapon in the foreseeable future.
אִם, חָס וְחָלִילָה, לְאִירָאן תִּהְיֶה פְּצָצַת אָטוֹם הִיא עֲלוּלָה לְהַחֲרִיב אֶת כָּל הָעוֹלָם, אֲבָל אֲנִי מְקַוָּה שֶׁפְּעוּלּוֹת חֵיל הָאֲוִיר הַיִּשְׂרְאֵלִי וְהָאָמֵרִיקָאִי הִצְלִיחוּ לְהַחֲרִיב אֶת הַיְּכוֹלֶת שֶׁל אִירָאן לְיַצֵּר פְּצָצָה גַּרְעִינִית בֶּעָתִיד הַנִּרְאֶה לָעַיִן.
