The national flag of every country holds deep significance for its citizens.
לְדֶגֶל הַלְּאוֹם שֶׁל כָּל מְדִינָה יֵשׁ מַשְׁמָעוּת עֲמוּקָּה מִבְּחִינַת הָאֶזְרָחִים שֶׁלָּהּ.
We feel a sense of pride when our country’s flag waves during international events such as the Olympics, Eurovision, and especially in sports competitions when our representative wins first place.
אֲנַחְנוּ מַרְגִּישִׁים גַּאֲוָה כַּאֲשֶׁר דֶּגֶל הַמְּדִינָה שֶׁלָּנוּ מִתְנוֹפֵף בְּאֵירוּעִים בֵּינְלְאוּמִּיִּים כְּמוֹ: אוֹלִימְפְּיָאדָה, אֵירוֹוִיזְיוֹן וּבְוַדַּאי בְּתַחֲרוּיוֹת סְפּוֹרְט כַּאֲשֶׁר נְצִּיג הַמְּדִינָה שֶׁלָּנוּ בַּמָּקוֹם הָרִאשׁוֹן.
In Hebrew, we have the expression "white flag" – after an argument with someone, when I want to make peace, I say to them "I am raising a white flag." Similarly, in war, when the enemy surrenders, they raise a white flag as a symbol of submission.
יֵשׁ לָנוּ בְּעִבְרִית אֶת הַבִּיטּוּי: "דֶּגֶל לָבָן" – לְאַחַר מְרִיבָה עִם מִישֶׁהוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנִי רוֹצָה לְהַשְׁלִים אִיתּוֹ אֲנִי אוֹמֶרֶת לוֹ "אֲנִי מְרִימָה דֶּגֶל לָבָן". גַּם בְּמִקְרֶה שֶׁל מִלְחָמָה כַּאֲשֶׁר הָאוֹיֵב נִכְנַע הוּא מֵרִים דֶּגֶל לָבָן כְּסִימָן לִכְנִיעָה.
