A patch - Patches
A patch is a piece of fabric. When there is a tear or hole in a garment, a piece of fabric is sewn over the damaged area—this is called a patch.
הַטְּלַאי הוּא חֲתִיכָה שֶׁל בַּד.
כַּאֲשֶׁר יֵשׁ קֶרַע אוֹ חוֹר בְּבֶגֶד תּוֹפְרִים עַל הַקֶּרַע חֲתִיכַת בַּד שֶׁנִּקְרֵאת טְלַאי.
In Germany in the 1940s, Jews were forced to wear a yellow patch on their clothing. This concept had two purposes: the first was to humiliate the Jews, and the second was to mark them so that Germans could distance themselves from them and avoid contact in daily life.
בְּגֶרְמַנְיָה שֶׁל שְׁנוֹת הָ – 40 הַיְּהוּדִים הוּכְרְחוּ לַעֲנוֹד עַל בִּגְדָּם טְלַאי צָהוֹב. לָרַעֲיוֹן הַזֶּה הָיוּ שְׁתֵּי מַטָּרוֹת: הָאַחַת – לְהַשְׁפִּיל אֶת הַיְּהוּדִים וְהַשְּׁנִיָּה לְסַמֵּן אוֹתָם כְּדֵי שֶׁהַגֶּרְמָנִים יוּכְלוּ לְהִתְרַחֵק מֵהֶם וְלֹא לִהְיוֹת אִיתָּם בִּקְשָׁרִים בְּחַיֵּי הַיּוֹם יוֹם.
We use the expression "patch upon patch" when we want to describe something that was not planned from the beginning to the end, and instead was gradually assembled, piece by piece. For example:
"This house is built patch upon patch."
"This plan was made patch upon patch."
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי "טְלַאי עַל טְלַאי" כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לְהַגִּיד עַל מַשֶּׁהוּ שֶׁאֵינֶנּוּ מְתוּכְנָן מֵהַהַתְחָלָה וְעַד הַסּוֹף וּבְמֶשֶׁךְ הַתַּהֲלִיךְ כָּל פַּעַם מוֹסִיפִים חֵלֶק. לְמָשָׁל:
"הַבַּיִת הַזֶּה בָּנוּי טְלַאי עַל טְלַאי"
"הַתּוׄכְנִית הַזּוֹ עֲשׂוּיָה טְלַאי עַל טְלַאי".
Although the phrase "patch upon patch" is not entirely positive, we also recognize the art of patchwork, in which quilts or tablecloths are made from patches, creating beautiful designs.
