In 1948, when the State of Israel was established, everyone here wanted to build the country.
בִּשְׁנַת 1948, כְּשֶׁקָּמָה מְדִינַת יִשְׂרָאֵל כּוּלָּם כָּאן רָצוּ לִבְנוֹת אֶת הַמְּדִינָה.
You can build houses or buildings—this is construction in the physical sense. But you can also build trust—this refers to the creation of a relationship in which people believe in one another. It takes a long time to build trust.
אֶפְשָׁר לִבְנוֹת בָּתִּים אוֹ בִּנְיָנִים זֹאת בְּנִיָּה בְּמַשְׁמָעוּת פִיזִית וְאֶפְשָׁר לִבְנוֹת אֵמוּן – זֹאת בְּנִיָּה שֶׁל מַעֲרֶכֶת יְחָסִים שֶׁבָּהּ אֲנָשִׁים מַאֲמִינִים אֶחָד לַשֵּׁנִי. זֶה לוֹקֵחַ הַרְבֵּה זְמַן לִבְנוֹת אֵמוּן.
Some people may not succeed in one thing, but they manage to rebuild themselves.
יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁלֹּא הִצְלִיחוּ בְּמַשֶּׁהוּ אֶחָד אֲבָל הֵם מַצְלִיחִים לִבְנוֹת אֶת עַצְמָם מֵחָדָשׁ.
We can also use the infinitive "to build" together with the preposition "on", meaning to rely on someone. For example: "Can I build on you to help me study for the exam?"
אֲנַחְנוּ יְכוֹלִים לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בְּשֵׁם הַפֹּעַל 'לִבְנוֹת' יַחַד עִם מִילַּת הַיַּחַס 'עַל' בְּמַשְׁמָעוּת שֶׁל לִסְמוֹךְ, לְדוּגְמָא: "אֶפְשָׁר לִבְנוֹת עָלֶיךָ שֶׁתַּעֲזוֹר לִי לִלְמוֹד לַמִּבְחָן?"
