To wave
On Independence Day, when we want to enjoy a barbecue, we place the meat on the grill and start to fan the flames.
בְּיוֹם הָעַצְמָאוּת, כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לֶאֱכוֹל "עַל הָאֵשׁ", אֲנַחְנוּ שָׂמִים אֶת הַבָּשָׂר עַל הַמַּנְגָּל וּמַתְחִילִים לְנַפְנֵף.
You need "to fan" the coals to supply them with oxygen so they continue to burn and generate heat, ensuring that our meat will be ready to eat.
צָרִיךְ לְנַפְנֵף כְּדֵי לְהַזְרִים חַמְצָן לַפֶּחָמִים, כְּדֵי שֶׁהֵם יַמְשִׁיכוּ לִבְעוֹר וּלְהוֹצִיא חוֹם וְאָז הַבָּשָׂר שֶׁלָּנוּ יִהְיֶה מוּכָן לַאֲכִילָה.
If someone annoys me or I don’t want to listen to them anymore, I might want to wave them away.
אִם מִישֶׁהוּ מְעַצְבֵּן אוֹתִי אוֹ שֶׁאֲנִי לֹא רוֹצָה לִשְׁמוֹעַ אוֹתוֹ יוֹתֵר – אֲנִי רוֹצָה לְנַפְנֵף אוֹתוֹ מִמֶּנִּי.
For example, if someone told me I wouldn’t succeed in something, but despite everything, I managed to do it, I would be happy to wave my success in their face to prove them wrong.
