Woman of Valor
The term "Eshet Chayil" (Woman of Valor) originates from the hymn of praise found at the end of the Book of Proverbs. It is traditionally sung on Friday evening around the festive Shabbat table, prepared by the woman.
אֵשֶׁת חַיִל הוּא בִּיטּוּי בְּשִׁיר הַלֵּל שֶׁמְּקוֹרוֹ בְּסוֹף סֵפֶר מִשְׁלֵי וְנָהוּג לָשִׁיר אוֹתוֹ בְּעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת סְבִיב שׁוּלְחַן הַשַּׁבָּת הַחֲגִיגִי שֶׁאוֹתוֹ הָאִשָּׁה הֵכִינָה.
The meaning of "Eshet Chayil" has evolved over time. In the past, it referred exclusively to a woman who cared well for her household, maintained cleanliness, cooked, and raised the children.
הַבִּיטּוּי 'אֵשֶׁת חַיִל' עָבַר שִׁינּוּיִים בַּמַּשְׁמָעוּיוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ. בֶּעָבָר, 'אֵשֶׁת חַיִל' הָיָה בִּיטּוּי אַךְ וְרַק לְאִישָּׁה שֶׁדָּאֲגָה לְבֵיתָהּ בְּצוּרָה טוֹבָה, דָּאֲגָה לְנִקָּיוֹן, לְאוֹכֶל וּלְגִידּוּל הַיְּלָדִים.
Later, the term was used for women who succeeded in balancing both a career and raising children.
אַחַר כָּךְ הַבִּיטּוּי אֵשֶׁת חַיִל הָיָה בְּשִׁימּוּשׁ עֲבוּר נָשִׁים שֶׁמַּצְלִיחוֹת גַּם לְהַחְזִיק קַרְיֶרָה וְגַם לְגַדֵּל יְלָדִים.
In recent years, we use the expression to describe a woman who has excelled in any field she chooses to pursue.
וּבַשָּׁנִים הָאַחֲרוֹנוֹת אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי כְּדֵי לְדַבֵּר עַל אִישָּׁה שֶׁהִצְלִיחָה בְּכָל תְּחוּם שֶׁבּוֹ בָּחֲרָה לַעֲסוֹק.
