Hard labor
The word "פֶּרֶךְ" means hardship, and thus the expression signifies extremely hard work.
הַמִּילָּה פֶּרֶךְ פֵּרוּשָׁהּ קוֹשִׁי.
וְלָכֵן מַשְׁמָעוּת הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה הִיא עֲבוֹדָה קָשָׁה.
We hear about the people of Israel in Egypt building the pyramids with massive stones. That was Avodat Perech—labor of immense difficulty.
אֲנַחְנוּ שׁוֹמְעִים עַל עַם יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁבָּנָה בְּמִצְרַיִם אֶת הַפִּירָמִידוֹת עִם אֲבָנִים גְּדוֹלוֹת מְאוֹד. זֹאת הָיְתָה עֲבוֹדַת פֶּרֶךְ.
In the Mishnah, the phrase "אֱגוֹזֵי פֶּרֶךְ" appears, referring to very hard nuts. It seems there was a Jewish settlement in the Shomron (Samaria) region known for cultivating nuts with extremely hard shells.
בַּמִּשְׁנָה מוֹפִיעַ הַבּ ִיטּוּי "אֱגוֹזֵי פֶּרֶךְ", כְּלוֹמַר אֱגוֹזִים קָשִׁים מְאוֹד. כַּנִּרְאֶה שֶׁהָיָה יִשּׁוּב יְהוּדִי בַּשּׁוֹמְרוֹן שֶׁהָיָה יָדוּעַ בְּגִידּוּל אֱגוֹזִים בַּעֲלֵי קְלִיפָּה קָשָׁה מְאוֹד.
To this day, we use this expression to describe very difficult work. For example:
Working in the garden is Avodat Perech.
He works in construction, and that is truly Avodat Perech.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה עַד הַיּוֹם כְּדֵי לְתָאֵר עֲבוֹדָה קָשָׁה מְאוֹד.
לְמָשָׁל:
- הָעֲבוֹדָה בַּגִּינָהּ הִיא עֲבוֹדַת פֶּרֶךְ.
- הוּא עוֹבֵד בִּתְחוּם הַבְּנִיָּה, זֹאת מַמָּשׁ עֲבוֹדַת פֶּרֶךְ.
