Darkness of Egypt
God inflicted ten plagues upon Egypt because Pharaoh refused to free the people of Israel, and the plague of darkness was the ninth.
ה' הֵטִיל עַל מִצְרַיִם 10 מַכּוֹת כִּי פַּרְעֹה סֵרֵב לְשַׁחְרֵר אֶת עַם יִשְׂרָאֵל. מַכַּת הַחוֹשֶׁךְ הִיא הַמַּכָּה הַתְּשִׁיעִית.
In our modern times, we don’t truly understand what “the darkness of Egypt” was like, as we are always surrounded by some form of light, even at night. However, during that period in Egypt, there was no electricity or artificial lighting—only the natural light of the sun, moon, and stars.
אֲנַחְנוּ לֹא בֶּאֱמֶת יוֹדְעִים בְּיָמֵינוּ מָה זֶה חוֹשֶׁךְ מִצְרַיִם, כִּי תָּמִיד יֵשׁ מִסְּבִיבֵנוּ אוֹר כָּלְשֶׁהוּא, אֲפִילּוּ בַּלַּיְלָה.
אֲבָל בַּתְּקוּפָה הַזֹּאת בְּמִצְרַיִם לֹא הָיָה חַשְׁמַל וְלֹא שׁוּם תְּאוּרָה מִלְּבַד הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ, הַיָּרֵחַ וְהַכּוֹכָבִים.
Today, we use this expression metaphorically. For example, when driving at night on a road outside the city with no streetlights, or when there’s a sudden power outage at night.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה בְּיָמֵינוּ, לְמָשָׁל, כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ נוֹסְעִים בַּלַּיְלָה בַּכְּבִישׁ מִחוּץ לָעִיר וְאֵין עַמּוּדֵי תְּאוּרָה בְּצִידֵּי הַכְּבִישׁ, אוֹ אִם יֵשׁ פִּתְאוֹם בַּלַּיְלָה הַפְסָקַת חַשְׁמַל.
Yet, as we know, even if we’re driving at night without streetlights, we still have the lights inside our vehicle. And even during a nighttime power outage, we still have the flashlight on our mobile phone. In short, the metaphorical use of "the darkness of Egypt" reflects how accustomed and somewhat spoiled we are by having constant light around us.
אֲבָל כְּפִי שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ יוֹדְעִים, גַּם אִם אֲנַחְנוּ נוֹסְעִים בַּלַּיְלָה וְאֵין עַמּוּדֵי תְּאוּרָה בְּצִידֵּי הַכְּבִישׁ עֲדַיִן יֵשׁ לָנוּ אוֹרוֹת בְּתוֹךְ הָרֶכֶב. וְגַם אִם יֵשׁ הַפְסָקַת חַשְׁמַל בַּלַּיְלָה עֲדַיִן יֵשׁ לָנוּ פָּנָס בַּטֶּלֶפוֹן הַנַּיָּד.
בְּקִיצּוּר אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי "חוֹשֶׁךְ מִצְרַיִם" בְּאוֹפֶן מֵטָאפוֹרִי כִּי אֲנַחְנוּ מְפוּנָּקִים וַאֲנַחְנוּ רְגִילִים שֶׁתָּמִיד יֵשׁ אוֹר מִסְּבִיבֵנוּ.
