To clean a table
The meaning of the expression doesn't refer to physically cleaning a table. Like the phrase "clean hands," it can be confusing.
הַמַּשְׁמָעוּת שֶׁל הַבִּיטּוּי אֵינָהּ נִקָּיוֹן פִיזִי שֶׁל הַשּׁוּלְחָן. כְּמוֹ הַבִּיטּוּי 'נְקִי כַּפַּיִם' הוּא יָכוֹל לְבַלְבֵּל.
We use this expression metaphorically to indicate that we need to address various matters that haven't yet been dealt with.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לוֹמַר שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ צְרִיכִים לְטַפֵּל בְּנוֹשְׂאִים שׁוֹנִים שֶׁלֹּא טוּפְּלוּ.
For instance, some people working in an office receive letters throughout the week or write down different topics they wish to handle later. However, they don't manage to take care of them, and those issues accumulate.
יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁעוֹבְדִים בַּמִּשְׂרָד וְהֵם מְקַבְּלִים בְּמַהֲלַךְ הַשָּׁבוּעַ מִכְתָּבִים אוֹ רוֹשְׁמִים לְעַצְמָם בְּמַהֲלַךְ הַיּוֹם עַל דַּפִּים נוֹשְׂאִים שׁוֹנִים שֶׁהֵם רוֹצִים לְטַפֵּל בָּהֶם יוֹתֵר מְאוּחָר, אֲבָל הֵם לֹא הִסְפִּיקוּ לְטַפֵּל וְהַנּוֹשְׂאִים מִצְטַבְּרִים.
They might say, "Before I go on vacation, I want to clean my table," or "Before the holiday, I want to clean my table." The meaning of this expression is that they want to deal with all the pending matters piling up on their desk.
הֵם יְכוֹלִים לוֹמַר: "לִפְנֵי שֶׁאֲנִי יוֹצֵא לְחוֹפֶשׁ אֲנִי רוֹצֶה לְנַקּוֹת שׁוּלְחָן" אוֹ לִפְנֵי הַחַג אֲנִי רוֹצֶה לְנַקּוֹת שׁוּלְחָן". וְהַמַּשְׁמָעוּת הִיא שֶׁהֵם רוֹצִים לְטַפֵּל בְּכָל הַנּוֹשְׂאִים הָאֵלֶּה שֶׁהִצְטַבְּרוּ עַל שׁוּלְחָנָם.
