אַל יִתְהַלֵּל חוֹגֵר כִּמְפַתֵּחַ
AL YITHALEL CHOGER KIMFATEACH
Let no one who puts on the belt (of war) praise himself as the one who takes it off
יִתְהַלֵּל – Will say words of praise, words of glorification.
חוֹגֵר – Someone who puts on their battle attire.
מְפַתֵּחַ – Someone who removes their battle attire.
יִתְהַלֵּל - יֹאמַר דִּבְרֵי הַלֵּל, דִּבְרֵי שֶׁבַח.
חוֹגֵר – מִי שֶׁלּוֹבֵשׁ אֶת בִּגְדֵי הַמִּלְחָמָה
מְפַתֵּחַ – מִי שֶׁמּוֹרִיד\מֵסִיר אֶת בִּגְדֵי הַמִּלְחָמָה.
The origin of this expression is in the Book of Kings I. The meaning is that one who is preparing for war should not speak as though they have already won the war, because no one knows what the outcomes of the war will be.
מְקוֹרוֹ שֶׁל הַבִּיטּוּי הוּא בְּסֵפֶר מְלָכִים א'. הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה רוֹצֶה לֺאמַר לָנוּ שֶׁמִּי שֶׁמִּתְכּוֹנֵן לְמִלְחָמָה לֹא צָרִיךְ לְדַבֵּר כְּמוֹ מִי שֶׁכְּבָר נִצֵּחַ בַּמִּלְחָמָה, כִּי אַף אֶחָד לֹא יוֹדֵעַ מָה תִּהְיֶינָה תּוֹצְאוֹת הַמִּלְחָמָה.
On a deeper level, this expression teaches us humility—to avoid concluding and certainly praising oneself before the work is completed.
וּבַמַּשְׁמָעוּת הָעֲמוּקָּה הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה רוֹצֶה לְלַמֵּד אוֹתָנוּ קְצָת צְנִיעוּת. שֶׁלֹּא נֹאמַר דִּבְרֵי סִיכּוּם וּבְוַדַּאי שֶׁלֹּא נִתֵּן לְעַצְמֵנוּ מַחְמָאוֹת לִפְנֵי שֶׁהִסְתַּיְּמָה הָעֲבוֹדָה.
This expression contradicts another saying in Hebrew (and other languages): "Words create reality." Some believe that one should state in words what they hope to achieve, as if they have already achieved it, because the words they speak create the reality. But then someone else might say: "Do not praise yourself as one who has already taken off their armor"
הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה עוֹמֵד בִּסְתִירָה לְבִיטּוּי אַחֵר שֶׁקַּיָּם בְּעִבְרִית (וְגַם בְּשָׂפוֹת אֲחֵרוֹת): "מִילִּים יוֹצְרוֹת מְצִיאוּת". יֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁאוֹמְרִים שֶׁצָּרִיךְ לְהַגִּיד בְּמִילִּים אֶת מָה שֶׁאֲנִי מְקַוָּה לְהַשִּׂיג כְּאִילּוּ כְּבָר הִשַּׂגְתִּי אֶת זֶה כִּי הַמִּילִּים שֶׁאֲנִי אוֹמֶרֶת יוֹצְרוֹת מְצִיאוּת. אֲבָל אָז יָבוֹא מִישֶׁהוּ אַחֵר וְיַגִּיד לִי: "אַל יִתְהַלֵּל חוֹגֵר כִּמְפַתֵּחַ".
