Tree-Trees

We call the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat "Rosh Hashanah La'Ilanot" (New Year for Trees) or "Birthday of the Tree."

אֶת הַיּוֹם הַ – 15 שֶׁל חוֹדֶשׁ שְׁבָט בְּלוּחַ הַשָּׁנָה הָעִבְרִית אֲנַחְנוּ מְכַנִּים בְּשֵׁם רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה לָאִילָנוֺת אוֹ יוֹם הוּלֶּדֶת לָאִילָן.

In the Hebrew calendar, we do not count the days of the year by numbers but by letters. א= 1, ב= 2, ג= 3, ד= 4, ה= 5, ו= 6, ז= 7, ח= 8, ט= 9, י= 10.

אֶת יְמוֹת הַשָּׁנָה בְּלוּחַ הַשָּׁנָה הָעִבְרִית אֲנַחְנוּ לֹא סוֹפְרִים בְּמִסְפָּרִים אֶלָּא בְּאוֹתִיּוֹת.

א=1, ב=2, ג=3, ד=4, ה=5, ו=6, ז=7, ח=8, ט=9, י=10.

To make the number 15, we would need to use the letters: י(= 10) + ה(= 5), but since this combination forms the explicit name of God, we do not use it and instead use: ט (= 9) + ו (= 6) = טו.

אֶת הַמִּסְפָּר 15 הָיִינוּ צְרִיכִים לְהַרְכִּיב מֵהָאוֹתִיּוֹת: י' (= 10) + ה' (=5), אֲבָל בִּגְלַל שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מְקַבְּלִים אֶת הַשֵּׁם הַמְּפוֹרָשׁ שֶׁל אֱלֹהִים לֹא נִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בַּצֵּירוּף הַזֶּה אֶלָּא נִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בְּ- ט' (=9) + ו'(=6) = טו.

The month of Shevat is the fifth month in the Hebrew calendar: Tishrei, Heshvan, Kislev, Tevet, Shevat, Adar, Nisan, Iyar, Sivan, Tamuz, Av, Elul.

חוֹדֶשׁ שְׁבָט הוּא הַחוֹדֶשׁ הַחֲמִישִׁי בְּלוּחַ הַשָּׁנָה הָעִבְרִית:

תִּשְׁרֵי, חֶשְׁוָן, כִּסְלֵו, טֵבֵת, שְׁבָט, אֲדָר, נִיסָן, אִיָּר, סִיוָן, תַּמּוּז, אָב, אֱלוּל.

Here are some sentences in honor of Tu Bishvat:

הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים לִכְבוֹד טו בִּשְׁבָט:

1. Tu Bishvat has arrived, a feast for trees.

1. טו בִּשְׁבָט הִגִּיעַ חַג לָאִילָנוֹת.

2. On the birthday of the tree, all the kindergarten children went out to plant fresh saplings in the area near the kindergarten.

3. On the birthday of the tree, we are accustomed to hold the Tu Bishvat seder and bless various types of dried fruits.

4. We celebrate Tu Bishvat, also known as "Rosh Hashanah La'Ilanot" or "Birthday of the Tree," to mark our connection to nature and the importance of preserving it.

4. אֲנַחְנוּ חוֹגְגִים אֶת טוּ בִּשְׁבָט הַיָּדוּעַ גַּם בְּשֵׁם 'רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה לָאִילָנוֹת' אוֹ 'יוֹם הוּלֶּדֶת לָאִילָן' כְּדֵי לְצַיֵּן אֶת הַחִיבּוּר שֶׁלָּנוּ לַטֶּבַע וְאֶת הַחֲשִׁיבוּת שֶׁבִּשְׁמִירָתוֹ.
