A tree - Trees

We use the word עֵץ in Hebrew both to – Tree and to – Wood.

For example: I have עֵץin my garden – this is in the meaning of Tree

However: שׁוּלְחַן עֵץ – Wooden table

אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּמִּילָּה עֵץ בְּעִבְרִית גַּם לְ – Tree וְגַם לְ – Wood.

לְמָשָׁל: יֵשׁ לִי עֵץ בַּגִּינָּה – זֶה בְּמַשְׁמָעוּת Tree

אֲבָל: שׁוּלְחַן עֵץ – Wooden table

However, the word עֵץ in the meaning of Tree is the only one which has a synonym which is אִילָן.

אֲבָל רַק לַמִּילָּה עֵץ בְּמַשְׁמָעוּת Tree יֵשׁ מִילָּה נִרְדֶּפֶת וְהִיא אִילָן.

The word "עֵץ" is used extensively in the book of Genesis, that is, it appears much sooner to the word אִילָן which appears only in the book of Daniel.

הַמִּילָּה עֵץ מוֹפִיעָה כְּבָר בְּסֵפֶר בְּרֵאשִׁית כְּלוֹמַר הִיא קוֹדֶמֶת בְּהַרְבֵּה לַמִּילָּה אִילָן שֶׁמּוֹפִיעָה רַק בְּסֵפֶר דָּנִיּאֵל.

You can say that the Jewish Sages used the word 'אִילָן' when they spoke of all kinds of flowers, and when they used the word 'עֵץ' they were referring to the raw material as in: Wood.

אֶפְשָׁר לְהַגִּיד שֶׁחז"ל (חֲכָמֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה) הִשְׁתַּמְּשׁוּ בַּמִּילָּה 'אִילָן' כְּשֶׁהֵם דִּבְּרוּ עַל כָּל מִינֵי צְמָחִים וּכְשֶׁהֵם הִשְׁתַּמְּשׁוּ בַּמִּילָּה 'עֵץ' הֵם הִתְכַּוְּנוּ לְחוֹמֶר הַגֶּלֶם כְּלוֹמַר: Wood.

Here are some sentences with the word אִילָן or עֵץ:

הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה אִילָן אוֹ עֵץ:

1. The 15th of Shevat is the New Year for the trees or the Birthday For the trees.

1. טו בִּשְׁבָט הוּא רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה לָאִילָנוֹת אוֹ יוֹם הוּלֶּדֶת לָאִילָן.

2. It is possible to use the expression: 'אִילַן יוֺחֲסִין' or the expression 'עֵץ מִשְׁפָּחָה' when we want to write our family genealogy.

2. אֶפְשָׁר לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בַּבִּיטּוּי: 'אִילַן יוֺחֲסִין' אוֹ בַּבִּיטּוּי 'עֵץ מִשְׁפָּחָה' כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לִכְתּוֹב אֶת הַגֵּנִיאוֹלוֹגְיָה הַמִּשְׁפַּחְתִּית לָנוּ.

3. At רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה לָאִילָנוֹת we plant saplings so that in the future they will be big trees for us and for our children.

3. בְּרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה לָאִילָנוֹת אֲנַחְנוּ יוֹצְאִים לִשְׁתּוֹל שְׁתִילִים כְּדֵי שֶׁבֶּעָתִיד יִהְיוּ לָנוּ וְלִילָדֵינוּ עֵצִים גְּדוֹלִים.

4. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge, which God had forbidden them to do.

4. בְּגַן הָעֵדֶן אָדָם וְחַוָּה אָכְלוּ מֵעֵץ הַדַּעַת לַמְרוֹת שֶׁאֱלֹהִים אָסַר עֲלֵיהֶם לַעֲשׂוֹת זֹאת.
