What is the difference between a glass and a cup? In English, the word כוס is translated as "glass" and the word ספל as "cup".

מָה הַהֶבְדֵּל בֵּין כּוֹס לְסֵפֶל?

בְּאַנְגְּלִית הַמִּילָּה כּוֹס מְתוּרְגֶּמֶת לְ – Glass וְהַמִּילָּה סֵפֶל לְ – Cup.

Some people say that we generally use a glass for cold drinks and a cup for hot drinks, and that a cup usually has a handle, while a glass does not.

יֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁאוֹמְרִים שֶׁבְּכוֹס אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל לִשְׁתִיָּה קָרָה וּבְסֶפֶל לִשְׁתִיָּה חַמָּה, וְשֶׁלַּסֵּפֶל בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל יֵשׁ יָדִית וּלַכּוֹס לֹא.

However, this is not entirely accurate because there are also cups without handles and there are glasses from which we drink coffee or tea.

זֶה לֹא מַמָּשׁ מְדוּיָּק כִּי יֵשׁ גַּם סְפָלִים לְלֹא יָדִית וְיֵשׁ כּוֹסוֹת שֶׁשּׁוֹתִים בָּהֶן קָפֶה אוֹ תֵּה.

Many people bring a cup as a gift because there are many cups with cute and funny inscriptions, and there are places where you can make a cup with a personal inscription.
