Sleeping like a log
The meaning of the expression: very deep sleep
Log = tree trunk.
מַשְׁמָעוּת הַבִּיטּוּי: שֵׁינָה עֲמוּקָּה מְאוֺד.
בּוּל עֵץ = גֶּזַע עֵץ.
Please note: There is a difference between the sleeping position called the log position and the meaning of the expression.
שִׂימוּ לֵב: יֵשׁ הֶבְדֵּל בֵּין תְּנוּחַת הַשֵּׁינָה שֶׁנִּקְרֵאת תְּנוּחַת בּוּל עֵץ וּבֵין מַשְׁמָעוּת הַבִּיטּוּי.
If a person sleeps on his side and his arms are at his sides, he looks like a straight tree trunk, then he is sleeping in the log position.
אִם אָדָם יָשֵׁן עַל הַצַּד וְהַיָּדַיִם שֶׁלּוֹ בְּצִדֵּי גּוּפוֹ הוּא נִרְאֶה כְּמוֹ גֶּזַע עֵץ יָשָׁר, אָז הוּא יָשֵׁן בִּתְנוּחַת בּוּל עֵץ.
But even if he does not sleep in the log position, but his sleep is very deep and even if there is a lot of noise around him, nothing bothers him - we can say that he sleeps like a log.
אֲבָל גַּם אִם הוּא לֹא יָשֵׁן בִּתְנוּחַת בּוּל עֵץ, אֲבָל הוּא יָשֵׁן מְאוֹד עָמוֹק, וַאֲפִילּוּ שֶׁיֵּשׁ הֲמוֹן רַעַשׁ מִסְּבִיבוֹ, שׁוּם דָּבָר לֹא מַפְרִיעַ לוֹ - אֲנַחְנוּ יְכוֹלִים לְהַגִּיד שֶׁהוּא יָשֵׁן כְּמוֹ בּוּל עֵץ.
