Grandma’s stories

Although grandmothers often have interesting stories and beautiful memories from the past, we use this expression in a negative sense.

לַמְרוֹת שֶׁלַּסָּבְתוֹת יֵשׁ הַרְבֵּה פְּעָמִים סִיפּוּרִים מְעַנְיְנִים וְזִכְרוֹנוֹת יָפִים מִן הֶעָבָר, אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה בְּמַשְׁמָעוּת לֹא חִיּוּבִית.

When we use this expression, we mean unbelievable stories, things that cannot be.

כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה אֲנַחְנוּ מִתְכַּוְּנִים לְסִיפּוּרִים לֹא אֲמִינִים, דְּבָרִים שֶׁלֹּא יְכוֹלִים לִהְיוֹת.

Maybe it's because sometimes grandmothers don't remember the details of the story exactly, because it happened a long time ago, so the details are not always accurate and sometimes a little confused.

אוּלַי זֶה בִּגְלַל שֶׁלִּפְעָמִים הַסָּבְתוֹת לֹא זוֹכְרוֹת אֶת הַפְּרָטִים שֶׁל הַסִּיפּוּר בְּדִיּוּק, כִּי הוּא קָרָה לִפְנֵי הַרְבֵּה זְמַן, אָז הַפְּרָטִים לֹא תָּמִיד מְדוּיָּקִים וְלִפְעָמִים קְצָת מְבוּלְבָּלִים.

So, if I asked someone to do something and they didn't do it and start making excuses, I'll tell them: "Don't tell me grandma stories."

אָז אִם בִּקַּשְׁתִּי מִמִּישֶׁהוּ לַעֲשׂוֹת מַשֶּׁהוּ וְהוּא לֹא עָשָׂה אֶת זֶה וּמַתְחִיל לְתָרֵץ תֵּירוּצִים, אֲנִי אַגִּיד לוֹ: "אַל תְּסַפֵּר לִי סִיפּוּרֵי סָבְתָא".
