The youngest child

בֶּן זְקוּנִים is the youngest child in the family. The word זְקוּנִים reminds of the word זִקְנָה, which means old age.

בֶּן זְקוּנִים הוּא הַיֶּלֶד הֲכִי הַקָּטָן בַּמִּשְׁפָּחָה. הַמִּילָּה זְקוּנִים מַזְכִּירָה אֶת הַמִּילָּה זִקְנָה שֶׁמַּשְׁמָעוּתָהּ גִּיל מְבוּגָּר.

The origin of the expression is from the Torah, from the story of the birth of Isaac to Sarah at the age of 90. "And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age" (Genesis 21:2).

מְקוֹר הַבִּיטּוּי הוּא מֵהַתּוֹרָה, מֵהַסִּיפּוּר שֶׁל לֵידַת יִצְחָק לְשָׂרָה בְּגִיל 90. "וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד שָׂרָה לְאַבְרָהָם בֵּן לִזְקֻנָיו" (בְּרֵאשִׁית כא, ב)

That is, Sarah bore Abraham a son when he was very old (and so was she..).

I don't know anyone today who gives birth at the age of 90, but the expression בֶּן זְקוּנִים remains in the language.

כְּלוֹמַר, שָׂרָה יָלְדָה לְאַבְרָהָם בֵּן כְּשֶׁהוּא הָיָה זָקֵן מְאוֹד (וְגַם הִיא..).

אֲנִי לֹא מַכִּירָה הַיּוֹם מִישֶׁהִי שֶׁיּוֹלֶדֶת בְּגִיל 90, אֲבָל הַבִּיטּוּי בֶּן זְקוּנִים נִשְׁאַר בַּשָּׂפָה.

If we think about it seriously for a moment, when the last child is born to us, we are older than we were when the first child was born, and therefore he is called בֶּן זְקוּנִים.

אִם נַחֲשׁוֹב עַל זֶה בִּרְצִינוּת לְרֶגַע, כַּאֲשֶׁר נוֹלַד הַיֶּלֶד הָאַחֲרוֹן אֲנַחְנוּ יוֹתֵר זְקֵנִים מִמָּה שֶׁהָיִינוּ כְּשֶׁנּוֹלַד הַיֶּלֶד הָרִאשׁוֹן וְלָכֵן הוּא נִקְרָא בֶּן זְקוּנִים.
