A knife in the back
The simple meaning of this expression is: betrayal.
הַמַּשְׁמָעוּת הַפְּשׁוּטָה שֶׁל הַבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה הִיא: בְּגִידָה.
When someone uses this expression, they not only want to say that they have been betrayed, but they also want to express pain, because this betrayal was committed by someone close.
כְּשֶׁמִּישֶׁהוּ מִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה הוּא לֹא רַק רוֹצֶה לְהַגִּיד שֶׁהוּא נִבְגָּד, אֶלָּא הוּא גַּם רוֹצֶה לְהַבִּיעַ כְּאֵב, כִּי הַבְּגִידָה הַזֹּאת נֶעֶשְׂתָה עַל יְדֵי מִישֶׁהוּ קָרוֹב.
When we have a war with an enemy, the enemy is in front of us and therefore cannot stab us in the back.
But who can stab us in the back?
כַּאֲשֶׁר יֵשׁ לָנוּ מִלְחָמָה עִם אוֹיֵב, הָאוֹיֵב נִמְצָא מוּלֵנוּ וְלָכֵן לֹא יָכוֹל לִתְקוֹעַ לָנוּ סַכִּין בַּגַּב.
אֲבָל מִי כֵּן יָכוֹל לִתְקוֹעַ לָנוּ סַכִּין בַּגַּב?
Someone who is close to us, someone we feel comfortable turning our back to and being sure that nothing will happen. And that's exactly when he stabs us in the back!
מִי שֶׁקָּרוֹב אֵלֵינוּ, מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מַרְגִּישִׁים נוֹחַ לְסוֹבֵב אֵלָיו אֶת הַגַּב וְלִהְיוֹת בְּטוּחִים שֶׁשּׁוּם דָּבָר לֹא יִקְרֶה. וְדַוְקָא אָז הוּא תּוֹקֵעַ לָנוּ סַכִּין בַּגַּב!
