Don’t look at the jug but at what’s in it
The expression "Do not look at the jar but at what is in it" originates from Masechet Avot and wants to warn us not to judge anything by its external appearance.
מְקוֹרוֹ שֶׁל הַבִּיטּוּי "אַל תִּסְתַּכֵּל בַּקַּנְקַן אֶלָּא בַּמֶה שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ" בְּמַסֶּכֶת אָבוֹת וְרוֹצֶה לְהַזְהִיר אוֹתָנוּ לֹא לִשְׁפּוֹט דָּבָר עַל פִּי מַרְאֵהוּ הַחִיצוֹנִי.
There may be something that does not look good from the outside, but its interior is of great value and the opposite can also be true.
יִתָּכֵן שֶׁיֵּשׁ מַשֶּׁהוּ שֶׁמִּבְּחִינָה חִיצוֹנִית לֹא נִרְאֶה טוֹב, אֲבָל פְּנִימִיּוּתוֹ בַּעֲלַת עֵרֶךְ רַב וְגַם הַהֵיפֶךְ יָכוֹל לִהְיוֹת נָכוֹן.
We use this expression in many areas of life, especially when we talk about relationships.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה בִּתְחוּמִים רַבִּים בַּחַיִּים וּבְעִיקָּר כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ מְדַבְּרִים עַל זוּגִיּוּת.
A guy who is looking for a partner and it is very important to him that she be beautiful will be advised with this phrase because when you are looking for a life partner, it is better for you to give more importance to her inner world and less to her external appearance.
בָּחוּר שֶׁמְּחַפֵּשׂ בַּת זוּג וְחָשׁוּב לוֹ מְאוֹד שֶׁהִיא תִּהְיֶה יָפָה, יְקַבֵּל אֶת הָעֵצָה הַזֹּאת כִּי כַּאֲשֶׁר אַתָּה מְחַפֵּשׂ שׁוּתָּפָה לַחַיִּים, עָדִיף לְךָ לָתֵת יוֹתֵר חֲשִׁיבוּת לָעוֹלָם הַפְּנִימִי שֶׁלָּהּ וּפָחוֹת לָמַּרְאֶה הַחִיצוֹנִי שֶׁלָּהּ.
