To shoot
Be careful not to get confused between the infinitive "לִירוֹת" - which means to shoot - and the infinitive "לִרְאוֹת" - which means to see.
הִזָּהֲרוּ שֶׁלֹּא לְהִתְבַּלְבֵּל בֵּין שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל: לִירוֹת - שֶׁפֵּירוּשׁוֹ to shoot וּלְבֵין שֵׁם הַפֹּעַל לִרְאוֹת שֶׁפֵּירוּשׁוֹ to see.
It is possible to shoot with a rifle or a shotgun, and in Lag Ba-Omer we are used to shoot with a bow and arrow.
אֶפְשָׁר לִירוֹת בְּאֶקְדָּח אוֹ בְּרוׄבֶה אוֹ בְּתוֹתָח ובל"ג בָּעוֹמֶר נוֹהֲגִים לִירוֹת בְּחֵץ וָקֶשֶׁת.
In general, we know that whoever wants to shoot at with a weapon he means to kill.
בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל אֲנַחְנוּ יוֹדְעִים שֶׁמִּי שֶׁרוֹצֶה לִירוֹת בְּנֶשֶׁק הַכַּוָּנָה שֶׁלּוֹ הִיא לַהֲרוֹג.
However, in the IDF, all soldiers are taught that it is forbidden to shoot with no reason. Only if there is a real danger is it permissible to shoot, but first of all you need to shoot to target the legs. You need to make an effort to neutralize the danger without killing the person.
