The writing was on the wall
Using this expression is precisely the same as saying: "I told you so!".
לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה זֶה בְּדִיּוּק אוֹתוֹ דָּבָר כְּמוֹ לְהַגִּיד: "אָמַרְתִּי לָכֶם!".
When we use this expression, we are in fact trying to say that there are signs that something is going to happen, generaly we are talking about something bad that is about to happen.
כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה אֲנַחְנוּ בְּעֶצֶם רוֹצִים לְהַגִּיד שֶׁיֵּשׁ סִימָנִים שֶׁמַּשֶּׁהוּ הוֹלֵךְ לִקְרוֹת, בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל אֲנַחְנוּ מְדַבְּרִים עַל מַשֶּׁהוּ רַע שֶׁעוֹמֵד לִקְרוֹת.
So I want to ask: If the writing was on the wall, why didn't you look at it and do something to be careful of what was about to happen?
אָז אֲנִי רוֹצָה לִשְׁאוֹל: אִם הַכְּתוֹבֶת הָיְתָה עַל הַקִּיר, לָמָּה לֹא הִסְתַּכַּלְתֶּם עָלֶיהָ וַעֲשִׂיתֶם מַשֶּׁהוּ כְּדֵי לְהִזָּהֵר מִמָּה שֶׁעוֹמֵד לִקְרוֹת?
Unfortunately, sometimes even if the writing is on the wall, and even if it is very prominent, people choose to ignore it and not do anything about it so as not to deal with the problem.
לְצַעֲרֵנוּ, לִפְעָמִים גַּם אִם הַכְּתוֹבֶת עַל הַקִּיר, וְגַם אִם הִיא בּוֹלֶטֶת מְאוֹד, אֲנָשִׁים בּוֹחֲרִים לְהִתְעַלֵּם מִמֶּנָּה וְלֹא לַעֲשׂוֹת כְּלוּם כְּדֵי לֹא לְהִתְמוֹדֵד עִם הַבְּעָיָה.
