The ship of the desert
The expression "ship of the desert" is a nickname for the camel.
Have you ever tried riding a camel? Those who do often feel like they are sailing in a ship.
הַבִּיטּוּי סְפִינַת הַמִּדְבָּר הוּא כִּינּוּי לְגָמָל.
נִסִּיתֶם פַּעַם לִרְכּוֹב עַל גָּמָל? מִי שֶׁרוֹכֵב עַל גָּמָל מַרְגִּישׁ כְּמוֹ מִי שֶׁמַּפְלִיג בִּסְפִינָה.
Just as a ship can travel long distances across seas and oceans for days, the camel can walk for many days in the desert without needing to drink.
כְּפִי שֶׁהַסְּפִינָה יְכוֹלָה לַעֲבוֹר מֶרְחָק רַב עַל גַּבֵּי יַמִּים וְאוֹקְיָנוּסִים בְּמֶשֶׁךְ יָמִים רַבִּים, כָּךְ הַגָּמָל יָכוֹל לָלֶכֶת בְּמֶשֶׁךְ יָמִים רַבִּים בַּמִּדְבָּר בְּלִי צוֹרֶךְ לִשְׁתּוֹת.
Similarly, as a ship can carry large cargo loads and transport them from place to place, the camel is also a beast of burden, capable of bearing heavy loads.
כְּפִי שֶׁהַסְּפִינָה יְכוֹלָה לָשֵׂאת מַשָּׂאוֹת רַבִּים בְּתוֹכָהּ וּלְה ַעֲבִיר אוֹתָם מִמָּקוֹם לְמָקוֹם, כָּךְ גַּם הַגָּמָל הוּא בֶּהֱמַת מַשָּׂא שֶׁנִּיתָּן לְהַעֲמִיס עָלֶיהָ מִשְׁקָל רַב.
The camel was an essential part of nomadic Bedouin society in the desert, and in Arabic, it is also called the "ship of the desert."
הַגָּמָל שִׁמֵּשׁ אֶת הַחֶבְרָה הַבֶּדוּאִית הַנּוֹדֶדֶת בַּמִּדְבָּר וְגַם בְּעַרְבִית הוּא נִקְרָא "סְפִינַת הַמִּדְבָּר".
