To invent the wheel
The wheel was invented many years ago. It is considered a brilliant invention, yet simple and without many operational problems.
אֶת הַגַּלְגַּל הִמְצִיאוּ לִפְנֵי הַרְבֵּה מְאוֹד שָׁנִים. הַגַּלְגַּל נֶחְשָׁב לְהַמְצָאָה גְּאוֹנִית אֲבָל פְּשׁוּטָה וּבְלִי הַרְבֵּה בְּעָיוֹת שֶׁל תִּפְעוּל.
If someone is proud of something they did, but in reality, it is not particularly complicated and has already been done before, I might say: "What? Do you think you’ve reinvented the wheel?"
אִם יֵשׁ מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁמִּתְגָּאֶה בְּמָה שֶׁהוּא עָשָׂה, אֲבָל בְּעֶצֶם הוּא עָשָׂה מַשֶּׁהוּ לֹא מְסוּבָּךְ מִדַּי שֶׁכְּבָר נַעֲשָׂה בֶּעָבָר, אֲנִי אַגִּיד לוֹ: מָה? אַתָּה חוֹשֵׁב שֶׁהִצְלַחְתָּ לְהַמְצִיא אֶת הַגַּלְגַּל?
Similarly, if I ask someone to do something and they say they don’t know how, I might reassure them by saying: "You don’t need to reinvent the wheel!"
בְּדוֹמֶה לְכָךְ, אִם אֲנִי מְבַקֶּשֶׁת מִמִּישֶׁהוּ לַעֲשׂוֹת מַשֶּׁהוּ וְהוּא אוֹמֵר לִי שֶׁהוּא לֹא יוֹדֵעַ אֵיךְ עוֹשִׂים אֶת זֶה, אֲנִי אֺמַר לוֹ: "לֹא צָרִיךְ לְהַמְצִיא אֶת הַגַּלְגַּל"!
And if someone wants to start a new project, but the project is only new to them, others have already done similar things—they can learn from those who succeeded or faced difficulties. That is to say: "There’s no need to reinvent the wheel!"
וְגַם אִם יֵשׁ מִישֶׁהוּ שֶׁרוֹצֶה לְהִכָּנֵס לְאֵיזֶשֶׁהוּא פְּרוֹיֶקְט חָדָשׁ, אֲבָל הַפְּרוֹיֶקְט חָדָשׁ רַק מִבְּחִינָתוֹ. אֲנָשִׁים אֲחֵרִים כְּבָר עָשׂוּ דְּבָרִים דּוֹמִים וְלָכֵן הוּא יָכוֹל לִלְמוֹד מֵהֶם אֵיךְ הֵם הִצְלִיחוּ אוֹ עִם אֵילוּ בְּעָיוֹת הִתְמוֹדְדוּ, כְּלוֹמַר: לֹא צָרִיךְ לְהַמְצִיא אֶת הַגַּלְגַּל!
