Added oil to the bonfire
What happens when oil is added to a fire? The flames become stronger!
מָה קוֹרֶה כְּשֶׁמּוֹסִיפִים שֶׁמֶן לַמְּדוּרָה?
הָאֵשׁ הוֹפֶכֶת לִהְיוֹת חֲזָקָה יוֹתֵר!
We use this expression when we want to say that someone is adding things to make a situation worse.
אֲנַחְנוּ מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בַּבִּיטּוּי הַזֶּה כְּשֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ רוֹצִים לוֹמַר שֶׁמִּישֶׁהוּ מוֹסִיף דְּבָרִים כְּדֵי לְהַחֲמִיר אֶת הַמַּצָּב.
For example: If I am angry at my son because I asked him to do something at home and he didn’t do it, and at that moment my other son comes and tells me that his brother did something else wrong— I could say to him: "Why are you adding oil to the fire?" Meaning, he is telling me these things to make me even angrier.
לְמָשָׁל: אִם אֲנִי כּוֹעֶסֶת עַל הַבֵּן שֶׁלִּי כִּי בִּקַּשְׁתִּי מִמֶּנּוׄ לַעֲשׂוֹת מַשֶּׁהוּ בַּבַּיִת וְהוּא לֹא עָשָׂה, וּבְאוֹתוֹ רֶגַע בָּא הַבֵּן הַשֵּׁנִי שֶׁלִּי וּמְסַפֵּר לִי שֶׁאָחִיו גַּם עָשָׂה עוֹד מַשֶּׁהוּ רַע. אֶפְשָׁר לְהַגִּיד לוֹ: "לָמָּה אַתָּה מוֹסִיף שֶׁמֶן לַמְּדוּרָה?", כְּלוֹמַר הוּא מְסַפֵּר לִי אֶת הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה כְּדֵי שֶׁאֲנִי אֶכְעַס יוֹתֵר.
In some families, this is very noticeable during holiday get-togethers. Everyone sits around the table, and sometimes arguments start—each person "adds oil to the fire", bringing up their anger and frustrations, until the metaphorical fire grows… and grows…
