You can see that inside the word "רעשן" (ra'ashan) is the word "רעש" (ra'ash). The ra'ashan (noisemaker) is a tool made of plastic or wood that can be used to make noise. So, what's the noise all about?

אֶפְשָׁר לִרְאוֹת שֶׁבְּתוֹךְ הַמִּילָּה רַעֲשָׁן נִמְצֵאת הַמִּילָּה רַעַשׁ. הָרַעֲשָׁן הוּא כְּלִי מִפְּלַסְטִיק אוֹ מֵעֵץ שֶׁבְּאֶמְצָעוּתוֹ אֶפְשָׁר לְהַרְעִישׁ. אָז עַל מָה הָרַעַשׁ?

As we know, one of the commandments of Purim is the reading of the Megillah. During the reading of the Megillah, every time the name "Haman" is mentioned, a loud noise is made with the ra'ashan.

כְּפִי שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ יוֹדְעִים, אַחַת מִמִּצְווֹת חַג הַפּוּרִים הִיא קְרִיאַת הַמְּגִילָּה. בִּזְמַן קְרִיאַת הַמְּגִילָּה, בְּכָל פַּעַם שֶׁאוֹמְרִים אֶת הַשֵּׁם "הָמָן" עוֹשִׂים רַעַשׁ חָזָק עִם הָרַעֲשָׁן.

The origin of this custom is from the commandment to erase the memory of Amalek, and Haman is considered a descendant of the Amalekite lineage.

מְקוֹר הַמִּנְהָג הַזֶּה הוּא מֵהַצִּיּוּוּי לִמְחוֹת אֶת זֵכֶר עֲמָלֵק וְהַמָּן נֶחֱשָׁב לְצֶאֱצָא מִגֶּזַע עֲמָלֵק.

There are fans who use giant ra'ashanim (noisemakers) at soccer and basketball games to confuse the players of the opposing team.

יֵשׁ אוֹהֲדִים שֶׁמִּשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בְּרַעֲשָׁנִים עֲנָקִיִּים בְּמִשְׂחֲקֵי כַּדּוּרֶגֶל וְכַדּוּרְסַל, כְּדֵי לְבַלְבֵּל אֶת שַׂחְקָנֵי הַקְּבוּצָה הַיְּרִיבָה.

Here are a few sentences with the word "ra'ashan":

הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה רַעֲשָׁן:

1. On Purim, during the reading of the Megillah, we usually use colorful and noisy ra'ashanim every time the name of Haman the evil is mentioned in the Megillah reading.

1. בְּפוּרִים, בִּזְמַן קְרִיאַת הַמְּגִילָּה, אֲנַחְנוּ נוֹהֲגִים לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בְּרַעֲשָׁנִים צִבְעוֹנִיִּים וּמַרְעִישִׁים בְּכָל פַּעַם שֶׁשְּׁמוֹ שֶׁל הָמָן הָרָשָׁע מוּזְכָּר.

2. The ra'ashan has become an integral part of major sports events, as fans use it to cheer for their team and express loud support.

2. הָרַעֲשָׁן הָפַךְ לִהְיוֹת חֵלֶק בִּלְתִּי נִפְרָד מֵאֵירוּעֵי הַסְּפּוֹרְט הַגְּדוֹלִים, כַּאֲשֶׁר הָאוֹהֲדִים מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁים בּוֹ כְּדֵי לְעוֹדֵד אֶת קְבוּצָתָם וּלְהַבִּיעַ תְּמִיכָה רוֹעֶשֶׁת.

3. Last year, I bought the children plastic ra'ashanim, but they broke easily, so this year I decided to buy wooden ra'ashanim.

3. בַּשָּׁנָה שֶׁעָבְרָה קָנִיתִי לַיְּלָדִים רַעֲשָׁנִים מִפְּלַסְטִיק, אֲבָל הֵם נִשְׁבְּרוּ בְּקַלּוּת אָז הַשָּׁנָה הֶחְלַטְתִּי לִקְנוֹת רַעֲשָׁנִים מֵעֵץ.

4. Along with the music at the Purim party, the celebrants used ra'ashanim and whistles to enhance the joy.

4. יַחַד עִם הַמּוּזִיקָה בִּמְסִיבַּת הַפּוּרִים, הַחוֹגְגִים הִשְׁתַּמְּשׁוּ בְּרַעֲשָׁנִים וּבְמַשְׁרוֹקִיּוֹת כְּדֵי לְהַגְבִּיר אֶת הַשִּׂמְחָה.
