Another one of the mitzvot of Purim is Mishloach Manot, and this mitzvah has two important purposes.
עוֹד אַחַת מִן הַמִּצְווֹת שֶׁל חַג הַפּוּרִים הִיא מִשְׁלוֹחַ מָנוֹת, וְיֵשׁ לַמִּצְוָה הַזֹּאת שְׁתֵּי מַטָּרוֹת חֲשׁוּבוֹת.
The first purpose is to strengthen friendships, closeness, and brotherhood within the Jewish people, and the second purpose is mutual responsibility, meaning to ensure that even the poor of the Jewish people have enough food to prepare a festive meal for themselves.
הַמַּטָּרָה הָרִאשׁוֹנָה הִיא לְהַגְבִּיר אֶת יַחֲסֵי הַחֲבֵרוּת, הַקִּרְבָה וְהָאַחְוָה בְּעַם יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְהַמַּטָּרָה הַשְּׁנִיָּה הִיא עַרְבוּת הֲדָדִית, כְּלוֹמַר לִדְאוֹג שֶׁגַּם לַעֲנִיִּי עַם יִשְׂרָאֵל יִהְיֶה מַסְפִּיק מָזוֹן כְּדֵי לְהָכִין לְעַצְמָם אֲרוּחַת חַג.
According to Halacha, the Mishloach Manot on Purim must be food items and not gifts like clothing or books. Gifts are for other holidays or birthdays. On Purim, put food in the Mishloach Manot!
עַל פִּי הַהֲלָכָה מִשְׁלוֹחַ הַמָּנוֹת בְּפוּרִים צָרִיךְ לִהְיוֹת מַאֲכָלִים וְלֹא מַתָּנוֹת כְּמוֹ בְּגָדִים אוֹ סְפָרִים. מַתָּנוֹת זֶה לְחַגִּים אֲחֵרִים אוֹ לִימֵי הוּלֶּדֶת. בְּפוּרִים שִׂימוּ אוֹכֶל בְּמִשְׁלוֹחַ הַמָּנוֹת!
Also, note: it is not Mishloach Mana, but Mishloach Manot, meaning the Mishloach Manot must include at least two items, and the more the merrier!
כְּמוֹ כֵן, שִׂימוּ לֵב: זֶה לֹא מִשְׁלוֹחַ מָנָה, אֶלָּא מִשְׁלוֹחַ מָנוֹת, כְּלוֹמַר מִשְׁלוֹחַ הַמָּנוֹת צָרִיךְ לִכְלוֹל לְפָחוֹת שְׁנֵי פְּרִיטִים וְכָל הַמַּרְבֶּה הֲרֵי זֶה מְשׁוּבָּח!
Here are a few sentences with the term 'Mishloach Manot':
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַבִּיטּוּי 'מִשְׁלוֹחַ מָנוֹת':
1. When my children were in kindergarten and elementary school, every year on Purim I sent them with Mishloach Manot, and they returned home with Mishloach Manot they received from someone else.
1. כְּשֶׁהַיְּלָדִים שֶׁלִּי הָיוּ בַּגַּן וּבְבֵית הַסֵּפֶר, בְּכָל שָׁנָה בְּחַג פּוּרִים שָׁלַחְתִּי אִתָּם מִשְׁלוֹחֵי מָנוֹת וְהֵם חָזְרוּ הַבַּיְתָה עִם מִשְׁלוֹחַ מָנוֹת שֶׁקִּבְּלוּ מִמִּישֶׁהוּ אַחֵר.
2. During Purim, volunteers distributed Mishloach Manot to nursing homes and hospitals to bring joy to the elderly and the sick and to bring some light and happiness into their lives.
2. בְּמַהֲלַךְ חַג הַפּוּרִים, הַמִּתְנַדְּבִים חִלְּקוּ מִשְׁלוֹחֵי מָנוֹת לְבָתֵּי אָבוֹת וּלְבָתֵּי חוֹלִים, כְּדֵי לְשַׂמֵּחַ אֶת הַקְּשִׁישִׁים וְהַחוֹלִים וּלְהַכְנִיס קְצָת אוֹר וְשִׂמְחָה לְחַיֵּיהֶם.
3. The employees here customarily exchange Mishloach Manot with each other on Purim, and each one puts effort into preparing a large, impressive Mishloach Manot with many sweets.
3. הָעוֹבְדִים כָּאן נוֹהֲגִים לְהַחְלִיף מִשְׁלוֹחֵי מָנוֹת בֵּינֵהֶם בְּחַג הַפּוּרִים, וְכָל אֶחָד מֵהֶם מַשְׁקִיעַ וּמֵכִין מִשְׁלוֹחַ מָנוֹת גָּדוֹל, מְפוֹאָר עִם הַרְ בֵּה מַמְתַּקִּים.
4. Purim is approaching, and this year I want to prepare an original Mishloach Manot. To do this, I can search the internet, where there are many original ideas for Mishloach Manot.
4. חַג פּוּרִים מִתְקָרֵב וְהַשָּׁנָה אֲנִי רוֹצָה לְהָכִין מִשְׁלוֹחַ מָנוֹת מְקוֹרִי. כְּדֵי לַעֲשׂוֹת זֹאת אֲנִי יְכוֹלָה לְחַפֵּשׂ בָּאִינְטֶרְנֶט, שָׁם יֵשׁ רַעֲיוֹנוֹת רַבִּים וּמְקוֹרִיִּים לְמִשְׁלוֹחֵי מָנוֹת.
