BUREKAS

The "burekas" is actually originally a Turkish dish, but in Israel, we absolutely love it. The burekas is a pastry made of puff pastry filled with various fillings.

הַבּוּרֶקָס הוּא לְמַעֲשֶׂה בַּמָּקוֹר מַאֲכָל תּוּרְכִּי, אֲבָל אֲנַחְנוּ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל מְאוֹד מְאוֹד אוֹהֲבִים אוֹתוֹ. הַבּוּרֶקָס הוּא מַאֲפֶה מִבָּצֵק עָלִים עִם מִילּוּי כָּלְשֶׁהוּא.

There are cheese burekas, potato burekas, mushroom burekas, pizza burekas, and even meat burekas. If you want to know what filling is inside the burekas, you can tell by its shape: Cheese burekas are always triangular, and potato burekas are always rectangular.

יֵשׁ בּוּרֶקָס גְּבִינָה, בּוּרֶקָס תַּפּוּחֵי אֲדָמָה, בּוּרֶקָס פִּטְרִיּוֹת, בּוּרֶקָס פִּיצָה וַאֲפִילּוּ בּוּרֶקָס בָּשָׂר. וְאִם אַתֶּם רוֹצִים לָדַעַת מַהוּ הַמִּילּוּי בְּתוֹךְ הַבּוּרֶקָס תּוּכְלוּ לָדַעַת אֶת זֶה לְפִי הַצּוּרָה שֶׁלּוֹ:

בּוּרֶקָס גְּבִינָה הוּא תָּמִיד בְּצוּרַת מְשׁוּלָּשׁ וּבוּרֶקָס תַּפּוּחֵי אֲדָמָה הוּא תָּמִיד בְּצוּרַת מַלְבֵּן.

However, the unique thing in Israel is "Burekas films." Burekas films are movies that depict the cultural conflict between Sephardic Jews and Ashkenazi Jews in Israel during the 1960s-1970s.

אֲבָל...הַדָּבָר הַמְּיוּחָד בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל הוּא סִרְטֵי בּוּרֶקָס: סִרְטֵי בּוּרֶקָס הֵם סְרָטִים שֶׁמַּצִּיגִים אֶת הַקּוֹנְפְלִיקְט בֵּין הַסְּפָרַדִּים וְהָאַשְׁכְּנַזִּים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל בִּשְׁנוֹת הַ – 60-70.
