There are some words that the Academy of the Hebrew Language has invented, but unfortunately, they failed to enter common usage simply because no one uses them. One such word is afifit. Afifit is the Hebrew word for "waffle."
יֵשׁ כַּמָּה מִילִּים שֶׁהָאָקָדֶמְיָה לְלָשׁוֹן עִבְרִית חִדְּשָׁה אֲבָל, לְצַעֲרֵנוּ, הֵן לֹא הִצְלִיחוּ לְהִכָּנֵס לַשָּׂפָה, כִּי, פָּשׁוּט, אַף אֶחָד לֹא מִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בָּהֶן. אַחַת הַמִּילִּים הָאֵלֶּה הִיא אֲפִיפִית. אֲפִיפִית הִיא הַמִּילָּה הָעִבְרִית לְוָפֶל (waffle).
Sometimes it happens. The Academy of the Hebrew Language establishes a new Hebrew word, but it doesn't catch on with the public. For example, the Academy decided on the word sach-rahok as a substitute for the word "telephone," which is not in Hebrew. However, no one uses this word, and everyone continues to say "telephone."
לִפְעָמִים זֶה קוֹרֶה. הָאָקָדֶמְיָה לְלָשׁוֹן עִבְרִית קוֹבַעַת מִילָּה עִבְרִית חֲדָשָׁה, אֲבָל הִיא לֹא נִקְלֶטֶת אֵצֶל הַצִּיבּוּר. לְמָשָׁל: הָאָקָדֶמְיָה קָבְעָה אֶת הַמִּילָּה 'שָׂח-רָחוֹק' כְּתַחֲלִיף לַמִּילָּה טֶלֶפוֹן שֶׁאֵינָהּ בְּעִבְרִית, אֲבָל אַף אֶחָד לֹא מִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בַּמִּילָּה הַזֹּאת, כּוּלָּם אוֹמְרִים: טֶלֶפוֹן.
People often argue about whether it’s correct to say waffle or vafla,and some even say bafla, but no one seems to acknowledge the real Hebrew word: afifit.
אֲנָשִׁים נוֹהֲגִים לְהִתְוַכֵּחַ הַאִם אוֹמְרִים וָפֶל אוֹ וַפְלָה וְיֵשׁ כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁאוֹמְרִים בַּפְלָה, אֲבָל אַף אֶחָד לֹא מִתְיַחֵס לַמִּילָּה הָעִבְרִית הָאֲמִיתִּית: אֲפִיפִית.
The word afifitappeared for the first time in the Glossary of Kitchen Terms by the Hebrew Language Committee in 1938.
הַמִּילָּה אֲפִיפִית מוֹפִיעָה לָרִאשׁוֹנָה בַּמִּלּוֹן לְמוּנָּחֵי הַמִּטְבָּח ש ֶׁל וַעַד הַלָּשׁוֹן הָעִבְרִית מִשְּׁנַת תרצ"ח (1938).
Here are some sentences with the word afifit:
הִנֵּה כַּמָּה מִשְׁפָּטִים עִם הַמִּילָּה אֲפִיפִית:
1. The afifitis a thin, flat, and sweet pastry.
1. הָאֲפִיפִית הִיא מַאֲפֶה דַּק, שָׁטוּחַ וּמָתוֹק.
2. There are special cookies made of several afifiyot stacked together, with sweet spreads such as chocolate, vanilla, or nut cream in between. Personally, I love lemon-flavored afifiyot.
2. יֵשׁ עוּגִיּוֹת מְיוּחָדוֹת שֶׁמּוּרְכָּבוֹת מִכַּמָּה אֲפִיפִיּוֹת שֶׁצְּמוּדוֹת זוֹ לְזוֹ וּבֵינֵהֶן מִמְרָח מָתוֹק, לְמָשָׁל: שׁוֹקוֹלָד, וָנִיל אוֹ קְרֶם אֱגוֹזִים, אֲבָל אֲנִי הֲכִי אוֹהֶבֶת אֲפִיפִיּוֹת בְּטַעַם לִימוֹן.
3. Are you familiar with afifiyot by Loacker? These are afifiyot shaped like small, thick squares, with many layers of waffles and chocolate or nut cream in between.
3. הַאִם אַתֶּם מַכִּירִים אֲפִיפִיּוֹת שֶׁל לוׄאָקֶר? אֵילּוּ הֵן אֲפִיפִיּוֹת בְּצוּרַת רִיבּוּעִים קְטַנִּים וְעָבִים עִם הַרְבֵּה שְׁכָבוֹת שֶׁל אֲפִיפִיּוֹת וּבֵינֵהֶן מִמְרַח שׁוֹקוֹלָד אוֹ קְרֶם אֱגוֹזִים.
4. The children in the class celebrated the birthday of one of their classmates and set up a table full of sweets and snacks. On the table, there were also afifiyotin all sorts of flavors.
4. יַלְדֵי הַכִּתָּה חָגְגוּ יוֹם הוּלֶּדֶת לְאַחַד הַחֲבֵרִים בַּכִּיתָּה, וְעָרְכוּ שׁוּלְחָן מָלֵא מַמְתַּקִּים וַחֲטִיפִים. עַל הַשּׁוּלְחָן הָיוּ גַּם אֲפִיפִיּוֹת בְּכָל מִינֵי טְעָמִים.
