Crackers
A cracker is a salty, thin, small, dry, and crispy biscuit. It's called that because when we eat it, it makes a sound: Crack... Crack...
קְרֵקֶר הוּא בִּיסְקְוִיט מָלוּחַ, דַּק, קָטָן, יָבֵשׁ וּפָרִיךְ. וְהוּא נִקְרָא כָּכָה כִּי כַּאֲשֶׁר אוֹכְלִים אוֹתוֹ אֲנַחְנוּ עוֹשִׂים רַעַשׁ: Crack...Crack...
This phenomenon is called onomatopoeia, and we have more examples of this in Hebrew, such as: drip, chirp (טפטוף, ציוץ).
זֹאת תּוֹפָעָה שֶׁנִּקְרֵאת אוֹנוֹמָטוֹפֵּיאָה וְיֵשׁ לָנוּ עוֹד כַּמָּה דּוּגְמָאוֹת בְּעִבְרִית לַתּוֹפָעָה הַזֹּאת לְמָשָׁל: טִפְטוּף, צִיּוּץ.
In Hebrew, the cracker is called "Matzia" (like a small matzah), but to be honest, no one uses that word; everyone says cracker.
בְּעִבְרִית הַקְּרֵקֶר הוּא מַצִּיָּה (כְּמוֹ מַצָּה קְטַנָּה), אֲבָל לְמַעַן הָאֱמֶת אַף אֶחָד לֹא מִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בַּמִּילָּה הַזֹּאת, כּוּלָּם אוֹמְרִים קְרֵקֶר.
We have crackers in all sorts of geometric shapes: triangles, squares, circles, pentagons, rectangles. There are small and large ones.
יֵשׁ לָנוּ קְרֶקֵרִים בְּכָל מִינֵי צוּרוֹת הַנְדָּסִיּוֹת: מְשׁוּלָּשִׁים, מְרוּבָּעִים, עֲגוּלִּים, מְחוּמָּשִׁים, מַלְבְּנִים. יֵשׁ קְטַנִּים יֵשׁ גְּדוֹלִים.
